If i were to buy the G51Vx-X1A right now, when i receive it, does it qualify for a free windows 7 upgrade? Or do i pay 50USD or something. Sorry for a new thread, i tried searching "windows 7 asus" but i keep getting 404 errors...

It qualifies for win 7 upgrade.

I just installed RC1 on my G51vx-x1a, the only issue I'm having is that I'm not getting any sound out of the speaker or headphone jack. Haven't tried HDMI yet. Working on downloading different drivers as I'm typing. We'll see how it goes.

I have a question, they are saying they are only giving 32 bit windows 7? If thats the case, do you get a discount if you pony up to 64? Because thats really odd.

Well windows 7 by default comes in both flavors, when you buy it, so i would assume that with the upgrade that you get for free there is both as well. i had a long talk to microsoft about their windows 7 upgrades to make shure i would get the 64 bit one, but ity seems that i can have either. the question lies in is the product key for both 64 and 32 bit or is it just for 32 bit.

also is the G51Vx-X1A eligible for the asus rebate? my bro just got one and was curios (well so am i :) )

BTW, I ended up getting the audio issues worked out. Took several "delete drivers and reinstall" but it finally worked out.

USD $50 would be kind of ridiculous. Was that person located in the US? I would assume Asus would charge different prices for different locations.

If you go to the upgrade site there is a figure that says "pay with visa or mastercard*"

The asterisk says "Shipping and handling fees may apply." which strongly suggests that the payment will not be just for shipping.

Anyways, if someone has the time, just fill out the information and it will pop up with how much you need to pay.

Don't know where I got the $50 from so that may just be me misremembering things....

I know at least Best Buy has/had this deal online, but other retailers may have had it, but I know on our website we were offering pre-orders of Windows 7 upgrade discs for just $50. That disc alone was independent of whether you got a new PC.

The idea behind the free upgrade to Windows 7 is a thing the manufacturers to to give people incentive to go ahead and buy a laptop now rather than wait for Windows 7 to be officially released, otherwise many people would wait until October to buy a laptop. Thats why if you buy a laptop right now, you get a free upgrade, as if the laptop you are buying now already has it pre-installed. You just have to wait until October to technically have it.

Well, I tried for my RX05, but Asus can't verify my serial number. I sent in one of their forms, so I'm waiting on that.

Well....I really do hope its free other than potential shipping fees but I'm too lazy to fill out the form myself since I would have to dig out my laptop box....

50$ USD is, I believe, the price of Windows 7 if you preorder it.

ok so everyone is sure its free? i went to ASUS and put USA as shipping address and it says shipping fee is N/A. So they are paying for everything, shipping and all? I think it was TevashSzat that i read in another thread that told me it was 50USD.

lol found it here it is...

Well....noone is really sure atm but now I'm positive that the $50 was me spouting off about things I didn't know about.... :( :( :(

Anyways, it would probably the quickest to just call Asus up and ask them.

The voucher says "Free upgrade," doesn't it?

If you're going to pay for anything, it's shipping; that's if Asus doesn't cut their losses and allows you to download Windows 7. I don't think it's ever been said that the only medium they would be using is a disk.

I called about the default BIOS password for the G51.

They told me they'd get back to me later that day.

    <_< It's tomorrow and I haven't heard anything.

    Great news guy.

Asus has been really quick and they just returned my email from yesterday.

They basically told be that they will be shipping a physical Windows 7 Upgrade Disc to us free of charge.

Shipping and handling will be charged but it is waived for everyone in the US.

great. this is good news. i was wondering since even the ASUS/microsoft pages said there would be "fees" and it was actually hard to find the word FREE upgrade so i was weary as to whether it would be free or not. thankyou tevashszat.
