I recently bought a Asus laptop and as soon as I updated it, the computer tells me that my Windows is not genuine. I went to the retailer and they tell me that they had installed a trail version Windows and that I will have to buy the original full version.
Is this even appropriate? I thot all laptops are suppose to come with genuine Windows 7, right? Or does this apply only to Asus laptops or different regions?
    Btw, my laptop is N61.

Some places where you can buy a laptop/desktop without windows are kobalt/xxodd which sell sager laptops which you can customize yourself.
Never heard of such things with asus, or any 'normal' (i.e. not webstores like the ones I mentioned) store.

So it seems to me that they are trying to rip you off.

If you're in India...then it can happen. I have seen many authorized retailers (of Dell at least, not Asus though), who sell laptops with just the DOS system on it to keep costs down.

Don't know if the same applies for Asus in India though. So its possible, but not probable that something like this would happen.

Actually more info is needed regarding where and from whom you purchased it from, and what was written on the accompanying specs sheet.

Do you have a windows COA tag on the bottom with a product key ?

What is your full model number, and did you purchase this laptop used ?

Back in the early 2000's in China, some of the retailers would give you a big discount if you bought one with Windows XP stripped out. Apparently they were selling the product key.

Then you'd go out on the street and buy a copy of WinXP for about $2 and use the included Asus utilities & drivers disk.

No wonder MS got so strict since then!

You can use something like windows 7 loader to install the .xms file with your key as well. There is a command line something or other that'll do it, but windows 7 loader is a nice GUI version.
