When I tried to update the BIOS using Winflash (version 2.18), the application
shows this message: "Fail to backup the BIOS file. Please, press
[FLASH] button to try again, or [EXIT] to abort." And as you know, pressing [FLASH] shows the same message again.

Try updating the BIOS from the BIOS menu itself, there should be an option somewhere. Put the BIOS file, unzipped, on a flash drive, insert it, boot into BIOS, and choose option Flash BIOS. This is the easiest option.

I think most newer ASUS notebooks support it.

Otherwise, try updating using the DOS flash utility, from a DOS prompt.

Not too sure if this helps you, but for me when I used Winflash on my S96J, I had to place the BIOS file on C drive root (not in any subdirectory). For some reason, flashing the file in a subdirectory always fails.

Glad it worked ;) I think BIOS update of BIOS is least prone to failure since you only have BIOS running rather than a (maybe buggy) OS and corresponding software.
