I sent in my V1S for hinge repair a while back, and when I got it back, the WLAN wasn't working. I sent it back in, and it came back with WLAN still not working, though the tech claims it was working when she sent it out. I'd really like to get this figured out without sending it to them again, so here's the rundown of the behavior.

WLAN does not work in the fresh copy of Vista they returned my copy with. WLAN does not work in the copy of Windows 7 I normally use. I upgraded my hard drive and sent it in for repairs with the original hard drive, so the copies of Windows 7 and Vista can easily be swapped around for diagnostic purposes, and the Vista install can certainly be overwritten.

Wireless does not show up in the device inventory under network devices, nor is there anything with a question mark in any other category. My one hope that it's fixable is that the bluetooth also does not show up under device inventory until I click the bluetooth button (the hardware one by the power button). Clicking the wireless button, of course, does not activate wireless. It kind of feels like it could be the button not working, but I've installed all the drivers I can find that seem like they're related to those buttons, and it's suspicious from the get go since the wifi was working when I sent it in. Fn-F2 enables/disables bluetooth, but does nothing noticeable with regard to wifi.

When I try installed the 4965 wireless drivers, it skips over one of the components, saying that the hardware it's for wasn't detected.
Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

Chances are, you've accidentally left the switch (software or hardware) set at "off". Then again.

I'd love if there's a switch to get it working, but I've never known of any hardware switch aside from the wireless button which I've tried.

The switch on the v1s is just software. At least I'm 70% sure since I last used that laptop. Since it's not showing in device manager, it's either that the driver was installed incorrectly by the techs, permanently disabling the device until you reinstall windows (this has happened to me on a different computer), or your wlan and/or motherboard are busted. I would first reinstall windows yourself, without installing any asus key software.

Next thing, since it's pretty easy to do on the v1s, is buy a cheap new wlan card and try that.

Fresh install of windows still shows no evidence of a wifi card, so I'm calling BS on their claim that it was working when shipped, especially since the invoice didn't say they'd replaced the card.

This sounds like a driver issue to me. Did you have a control program loaded before called Wireless console or one of that type ?
If you have a button that starts your wireless card it is most likely controlled by a driver and is not hardwired to the wireless card.
Post what drivers and control programs you had on the computer before you sent it in as this may help find what the cause is. That is if you can remember what was installed.

The only other thing I can think of is that they did not get the wireless card plugged back into the motherboard , but the tech said that it was working when it was sent back. But they could also have just said that as not to get charged for the repair for not getting it put back correctly .
Anyway let us know what you can and we may be able to help you find the cause.

Yeah, there's driver software for it. I first tried reinstalling their software, and that did nothing. Second thing I did was reinstall fresh, install Intel's drivers, see nothing, then install Asus' drivers and still detect nothing. If there isn't a driver installed, it should show up as a misconfigured device. No device shows up at all.

    Amazon.com: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 - Network adapter - PCI Express Half Mini Card - 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11n: Electronics

If you really want to keep your V1s and not have to deal with asus anymore, I'd recommend trying that. As long as you are absolutely sure no "unknown devices" appear in the manager. Worst comes to worst, the new card doesn't work and you know you have a busted mobo. You can at least use the new card in your next computer.

First: Have you opened the back panel covering the card and visually inspected it yet?

I had the same problem with my M60J when it was returned to me from RMA. Wifi didn't work, so I've opened laptop and saw the next thing - Intel's Wifi chip had two connection, one of which was connected with the wire. The other one (unconnected) had word "Main" written on him. So what do you think I did? That's right, I've reconnected the wire and now it works well, although Wifi's LED indicator doesn't work but that must be fault of whoever had repaired my computer. Hope it helps!
