Just wondering how many here would purchase this laptop if the price is more than $1500.
-
I would think about it for 1599, but if is more then that, I would just go with the W3J...
-
the w3j is not as portable as the w7j. I like the smaller screen size, hence my current m5n. Plus, the resolution on the 13 is the same as the 14. Higher density pixels, lower weight...
-
Maybe at 1599 but nothing higher. Its just not worth it. You might as well get the W3J. Now I know its a different size "class" of notebooks and appeals to different users. However, I find the whole distinction that people talk about in terms of size and weight between a 13.3 and 14 a huge joke. Lets be realisitic, an inch at most wider and longer and at most a pound more. If you really would pay for the W7J at 1699 or 1799 and pass on the W3J then theres something very wrong.
-
$1599 seems reasonable, however, who cares what it may cost, the machine is vaporware here in the US. Asus needs to remember that the Sony SZ series has been out several months now thus by the time the W7j is actually made available to the US, I would suspect that the SZ would be coming down in price, and possibly have a refresh of the models which of course would hinder W7j sales. Justin's post regarding the disarray in Product Managers leaving Asus's notebook division does not bode well for the timely release of this model. What the heck is ASUS thinking? At some point I may just have to look back to Sony, particularly if they have a refresh of the SZ with an improved keyboard. I am sick of waiting for ASUS to get is act together, some parts of the world have the W7J, yet the US market has to wait and wait and wait, by the time it is released (if its is released) it will be dated in its technology.

OK there is a big difference in weight between the w3j and a w7 its almost 1.5lbs thats a big amount in terms of laptops. go pick up a 4lb laptop then a 5.5 you could be extrememly surprised in the difference in how it feels. -
As my girlfriend said when i talked to her about wanting to get a 12-13" laptop. "Im a girl and im buying a 17" laptop for school, while you're a guy. Aren't men supposed to be able to suck it up more than women and not whine at much as women do? "
I would personally rather get a kickass laptop with a nice screen and suck it up carrying an extra 2lbs in my backpack, rather than buying a crappy screen with crappy specs, for which i'd pay just as much, or even more money.
I felt really silly about my idea getting an ultra portable 12" laptop when my gf says she's got the power to lug around a 17" er... -
can't wait for W7J; let's hope the price is right.
-
What does it even mean that there is something very wrong? I have a 5.5 lb notebook and i want something smaller with better graphics than the W5f. If your girlfriend can shame you into carrying an extra 2lbs, why not shame you into spending a couple hundred bucks more?
My point is this is all personal preference and to say that objectively noone should go with the W7j at more than 1599, as opposed to the W3j is ridiculous. -
-
Personally, I would still gladly get the W7J even if it was the same price as the W3J. I'm going to be carrying this laptop with me every day, and I want to be able to be able to carry it in one light and small bag along with few other essentials. I've carried around some of my friends' laptop bags with 14" 5.5lb laptops and it's not the most convenient thing.
Plus, I'm not going to be playing many graphically demanding games on this notebook, so the x1600 on the W3J is unnecessary for my needs. I'd rather have a smaller, lighter, and cooler running machine. However, I do need a decent dedicated graphics card, in order to run older games. The only other 13.3" notebook that I know of with dedicated graphics is the Sony SZ, and I don't like the keyboard or flimsy feel of those machines.
As for the screen, I think 13.3" is a good size. I can read text on it just as well as a 14", whereas 12" screens seems to cause some eye strain when I use them for extended periods of time. I have a hard time justifying the added size and weight of the W3J when it's not gaining me any screen real estate. After all, I could get a machine that's only one inch longer and the same weight (Macbook Pro) but has a WXGA+ screen! -
I agree with the $1599 price point. I might even consider $1649, but certainly no higher. I cannot justify more money than that for a laptop which requires me to get a second battery, which it seems anything with the power I want will require.
-
How's the battery life on the W7J ? I read somewhere its only about 3hrs, might as well get the W3J.
-
I'm thinking if the price is the same as the W3J I'll probably go for a W3J. If it's lower...I'm still very undecided.
-
When's it coming to the UK? -
I wouldnt get it because it's over my budget. But for someone who is willing to pay $1500+, i say it's a pretty **** great for a notebook.
-
I did speak to the guys at www.asuslaptops.co.uk about two weeks ago about the A8Jc and they mentioned that a 13.3 inch asus was coming out, however at that time that is all they knew, no specs and no ETA. -
a 1.5 lb more from a weight of 4 lb is an almost 40% increase in weight, so that's a lot, you can not compare in just raw number since it's so light to begin with. If you do, then a laptop that weighs in 10 lb is nothing, since in life 10 lb is really light, are there anyone who can not pick up a 10lb weight?
sure 1" is nothing, but if you keep saying that, soon it would be 10" different since it's only 1" more from 9" and 8" and so on so forth.
why not buy a 15" then if you are talking about a 14" since it's only 1" away which is yet just another 1" from 13" -
Wow... He just raised the price to $50 more...I'll get it from zipzoomfly if they carry them...
-
I wouldn't purchase it if it were over $1,500(I'm happy with the w3j), but for the form factor and power I can see it selling for more than that.
-
They announced it was going for $1500 and a lot of people wainting this so they raised the price. I wouldn't want to deal with those vendors.
Edit: Some of you may not agree with me but it looks like a bait to me since the original price was supposed to be 1500. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
. All pricing for the unit was based on comments from the Asus NA PM, who was in the process of leaving (being fired?) from the company at the time, and is now generally felt by all concerned to have been unreliable. Plus, the pricing was probably too good to be true in the beginning and has turned out to very likely be such.
Danny at MilestonePC is probably going to be selling his at a loss the way this is going, but is trying to do the right thing by being upfront and also guaranteeing the old (low) price if you get in early. ProPortable is guaranteeing that they will refund the difference on their orders if the price comes in lower then their now anticipated $1799. -
I doubt that he's selling at his loss. How did he come up with 1500 at first then raise bump the price up to $50? It seems to me that he offered the 1500the first time to lure people in but that's my opinion and I'm sure those who think this is cheap will stand by his side. Some of the people also stated they will pay no more than 1599 and guess what? Plus the handling fee and insurance turn out to be exactly 1599.

Any store claims " price and specs are subject to change without notice ", when I felt the $1499 was kind of too low, I didn't raise the price right away, instead of that, I sent e-mail to all the people who has asked me about this model to inform the price will raise up in late that day, if you want to order at the old price, please order before price getting higher, I also posted this message on this forum to tell the higher price in advance. There was a customer e-mail me today said he missed that e-mail I sent yesterday because he was on a business trip yesterday, I still agreed $1499 for his order.
I think that will be all I can offer, I raised the price in a decent way, no baiting / tricking stuff there. You might think I am making alot of money from that price, but that is not true. -
Mikez: If they honor the lower price, then no bait and switch, right? If they void the pre-order because the price turns out to be higher, then you can make the choice, eh? How is that a bait and switch. It's not like you have traveled out to a bricks and mortar to find no sale price items in stock. If you don't like the price point - vote with your feet and don't buy it. My understanding is that the resellers are at the whim of the supplier - no conspiracy.
-
Like I said, it's just my opinion. I just don't see it's right to bump up the price to $50 within one day... I don't know how much you make from the deal but if I have to guess it would be at least $300-500 and you times that by xxx of buyers, you would gain a lot.
-
Just to let you guys know. Type W7j in ebay... All over $2000 USD!
-
I was expecting at least $1599 or perhaps $1699. I know the MilestonePC doesn't make nearly $300-$500! Per notebook sold! That would be insane!! Infact most notebook dealers make around $100, give or take $50 or so... per notebook sold. Milestone was taking a big risk selling it at $1499. What if Asus had it listed at $1699? And Asus sold it to him for $100 cheaper than that. He would end up making -$100 USD.

There's no way that he's making that low. Who would tell us how much they profit anyway..

This is not a very profitable business, for example, when buy hard drives, to buy 10 pcs comapred with to buy 100pcs on one order, I may get 25 cents cheaper on each piece, it sounds funny, but it will be all they can afford.
Give you a few examples of current promotion from a very big distributor:
Asus promotion, $0.5 off on each is already called a promotion:
Miccrosoft promotion is only 1.5% off

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Based on comments in the past from various resellers, typical notebook profit margins tend to be 5% or less. Danny, along with Eddie, Justin, and Donald, are all honest, very reputable resellers with a long history on this forum who deserve better than this. I, for one, appreciate all that they contribute to this forum. We need to move on to a different topic.
PS - Danny: Clearwater Beach is very nice this time of year on the gulf coast, and is top 5 in the world. I'll hold a place for you -
I would buy the w7j for a little more than $1500. Somewhere along the lines of what milestonepc is charging now would be right. The only reason I say this is because the w5f--if I am not mistaken--is now $1599 with a $200 rebate. Some customers (not me) may be in the market for a 12-14 inch notebook and would have to consider both the w5f and the w7j. Plus if the battery can barely get 2.5 hours, then that's pretty weak. I would have to upgrade to the 9 cell.
Would you get the W7J if it's more than $1500?
