Ati released the new 7.2 drivers today, again with NO MENTION of the x1700, did they forget they produced the chip? What is the deal? Why the lack of support for their newest chip? It is starting to really get on my nerves. Anyone know how or why this is happening?

The mobility drivers provided on ATI's site are officially only for a selected group of manufacturers, a list that can be found on their site when trying to download the drivers. Unfortunately, Asus is not one of those manufacturers. Until one of the other manufacturers incorporate the X1700 in their laptops, I doubt we will see that card supported in their releases. The list of supported manufacturers can be found here:

i agree this sucks the nuts. have anyone tried the latest omega drivers based on the 7.1 catalyst? I've tried doing the inf editing with the mobility 7.1s, but the resolutions are gayed up in games, so I went back to the default vga drivers on the asus website (based on the 6.8 catalyst I think).

Out of curiousity what happens when you try to use other drivers in the standard download links we use? The X1700 is basically a X1600 on steriods. Dunno if any FireGL5250 drivers have been released anywhere (X1700 equivalent). Something has to be somewhere on the manufacturers site...or on the CD or something when you buy it. Is it just there is nothing for Vista other than the inbox driver? There must be at least something newer... what is the version you guys are using now?

They have X1800 Mobility drivers out there. I'm finding this to be rather odd.

What happens if you download from the standard link like this? http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/ What does it say? No supported hardware could be found? Not sure,t hats probably just the link for XP and not Vista tho.

    Cat

P.S. I know for a fact that Lenovo posted Vista drivers which support X1700s 3 days ago.
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-66884

It says right here: - ATI Mobility FIREGL V5250 - but these are not FireGL specific drivers so they work the same as on a regular X1700. There must be some others like this somewhere...or coming very soon.

Under XP it refuses to install because the hardware isn't listed in the INF file. Essentially the x1700 isn't on its list so the install program stops. I'm using the latest Asus drivers for the V1Jp. Asus manually added the x1700 onto the list. Even with this hack some things don't work correctly which is probably why ATI didn't include the x1700 in the first place. Power management doesn't work as far as I can tell.

Interesting, didn't know they released the x1800 so much earlier - probably a hot powerhog I'm guessing. The X1700 (M66) is nice tho, like an X1600 (M56) but a bit better. Its a good sign though those Lenovo Vista drivers above. There should be some like that for ASUS or general release soon :)

    Cat

P.S. Note that there is not listed on the ATI site any official FireGL 5250 (M66) driver, but the Lenovo site has it already for their systems. Make sure to check both the ASUS and ATI sites for the latest drivers, especially when it comes to Vista...

This Cat 7.2 installed fine on my Samsung X60plus with X1700. It has caused me no problems so far, but I am not a gamer.

My complaint is about the continued absence of PowerPlay. Is this available in the Asus X1700 driver? Until this is in place, the battery running time is taking a big hit.

Ouch thats a bug. I've seen that before for some drivers. If you care about the battery life, I'd use the version just before that one, or the one after when it is next out. You should have Powerplay control, the tab not being there is a bug in the installer I heard...

You just installed it from the download link though? And are you running Vista or XP?

    1. I've never seen the PowerPlay tab with any version of the X1700 drivers for my computer. ATI told me it was Samsung's problem. Hence my question whether Asus people with X1700 have PowerPlay.

    2. I'm still using XP.

Ya, there is confusion here...some people talking about XP, some about Vista. Driving me nuts trying to figure which way is what. The inf file for the latest XP Catalyst version does include X1700.

I've never heard of a system not having Powerplay. I have it fine on a FireGL 5250 system. I don't have a straight X1700 system though. I've seen the tab go away with some drivers, but for the good ones its always there.

Could be Samsung though something they are doing wrong that would blue screen or somehow badly affect the system if it was allowed to work.

There's probably some minor Microsoft WHQL testing bug which is preventing them from giving out the X1700 Driver for Vista where as they can for XP and that if people tweak it they can get it to work in Vista. Maybe its something to do with Powerplay, and in XP they can get around it by just disabling Powerplay, but in Vista they aren't allowed to do that so they have to find a total fix for it. They're probably working on it now like mad, having the device on the market and the OEMs are almost certainly pushing them. I'd keep watching, a fix has to be on the way sometime soon :).

I tried to install the Catalyst 7.2 and it failed...no supported hardware. This is on a G2 with X1700. I looked in the .inf file and i did not see the x1700 listed. Win XP

On the V1Jp the power play tab shows up but doesn't work. It always detects that the notebooks is on AC. I use ATI Tray Tool to manually underclock the video card when on battery, which is the samething power play does any how.

Is this the same INF you see? (The first few lines anyway, the file is 153kb total so I decided not to post it all)

As I said earlier though, this is for XP, with Vista it probably has some bug thats keeping them from making it official.

The inf says the X1700 is supported with the M56 drivers, the Release Notes don't make special mention of the X1700, but that may be a bug.

They do say this in the Known Issues:

"Resuming from an S4 state on a system running Windows XP and containing an ATI Mobility Radeon® X1700 series of product may result in corruption being noticed. Further details can be found in topic number 737-25233 "

Do you know why then, when I tried to install, I got the no supported hardware error? Should I uninstall the current drivers first and just have a basic VGA driver installed?

If you've got a few minutes give that a try by all means. There can be issues with upgrading so that might help. Also check the file I mentioned above and make sure it is the same for you. It extracts to C:\Support\ATI\... by default.

I'm not saying 100% it will work, but if it doesn't its not because the inf doesn't list it... - and as per my last post they even included a known issues about the X1700, seems odd that they note those kind of things if the driver doesn't even support that card.

What is the device ID on the details tab of the display adaptor properties? Near the beginning of the ID string you should see .... DEV_71D5&SUBSYS ..... or maybe DEV_71DE&SUBSYS or DEV_71DE&SUBSYS. These are the IDs for the X1700 so you should have one of them.

If the ID is OK, you could try a clean install, but I had no problem upgrading (in my case from the original Samsung driver).

7.2 seems to contain support for the X1700, but its not official. Shouldn't be any problems though to use this for now, but you will want to get the newest version from your OEM when they release theirs.

Some of you may be having problems installing on your X1700 in XP because you are trying to install the desktop card driver. You have to download the driver specifically for Mobility Radeon, not the regular Radeons.
