I picked up a new Asus x501a few weeks ago and am concerned that the fan is constantly whirring away, its not loud but noticeably there in the background. its a bit annoying so i am wondering if there is a problem or not? I had the apportunity to compare my new notebook with another one (the same model notebook, the same BIOS), and i have no doubt that there is a difference between them talking about fan working.

Is it possible that the problem is Windows 7 32 bit?

It's not your OS. Either it's normal and the fan simply has an annoying dB rating, or your temps are not stable (or worst case, there's a hardware malfunction).

Have you used a utility to check your temperatures?

Oh there are quite a few. HWinfo is a good one (HWinfo64 if you were running a 64-bit OS). CPU-Z and GPU-Z aren't bad either. You've also got HWMonitor and SpeedFan, among others.

1900 RPM as soon as cpu reaches 40 degree temperature. Is it normal?

1900 RPM isn't very high, and neither is 40 C. SpeedFan may allow you to adjust your fan speed if it's bothering you; just as long as you maintain low temps it should be fine. The noise could be due to the motor of the fan or an obstruction. That doesn't necessarily mean that something is wrong with it, but you may never know if that's the case or not without opening the laptop up and inspecting - which is not advised as it would void your warranty.

But it runs always like that or much higher - no matter what I'm doing with it. In my opinion 1900 is very high considering that sometimes it just runs only Chrome. By the way, the fan motor is changed.

It's a function of the EC and a design choice to keep temperatures lower to reduce failure rates and sacrifice noise output.

Define any damage, as electronics are constantly degrading from use ;)

You need to find a program that can control the fan speed or get someone to modify your EC.

This is what I thought. But the misnomer here to me is:

So I assumed it was case specific.

I thought it was auto when I unplugged mouse!! Where do I find tthe access for turning this bugger back on>?> I'm using Win8 and of course this notebook from Asus. im stumped, literally!

    Maybe Fn+f9?
About mine.. Do you use Power4Gear? I would be very grateful if you could help me and check your rpm status.. What about temperatures? And which BIOS version do you have?

There should be. Give NoteBook FanControl (NBFC) a try, but by the looks of it it does not currently support your laptop. As there is no configuration file for it. You can work with the developer in that thread to find a solution for your laptop.

If you want to speed things up a bit, I may be able to help you. Can you please download RWEverything and provide me with your DSDT table? Once you have installed RW-Everything, run it and from the "Access" menu, choose "ACPI Tables". From the "ACPI Table" window that opens, first select the DSDT tab to make sure the DSDT table is active, then choose the "Save as Binary" button on toolbar (or Shift+F2). Save that file, compress if (such a ZIP, RAR) and upload it to a filesharing service (such as mediafire.com) and post a link here on forum.

I will also need you to provide me with a screenshot of the Embedded Controller memory. You can view Embedded Controller memory using RWEverything. It should look like this:

One I have both pieces, I can then look at your DSDT table and Embedded Controller memory dump and figure out how the fan can be controlled on your laptop. Once I have that information, I can either create an NBFC configuration file for you, or you can further work together with NBFC developer to find a solution that works for your laptop.

To answer your question of whether it is normal for a fan to spin at 1900rpm with 45C CPU temperature, then it not that it is not normal, it is that it is not necessary. The fan should not be working (and bothering you) when the CPU is only 45C degrees. It should be off until the CPU reaches 65C when it should turn on. The problem is that ASUS doesn't seem to care much about their users and many ASUS models exhibit similar behaviour. Your computer is not defective, it is the way ASUS designed it to behave.

Also, please confirm that you only have ONE fan in your laptop and NOT two. Actually, according to this video it only has one.

Is it safe? Will I void my warranty? And can you tell me the way to check how many fans i have in my laptop? Im almost certain that I have only one, but..

You can check the number of fans by either 1) X-ray goggles 2) opening your laptop 3) listening to the fans. I found a Youtube video where a person was opening laptop just like yours and there was only one fan, so I am afraid you may want to find another use for your X-ray goggles.

It is fairly safe, in absolute worst case it will turn off the fan completely, but your computer will not be damaged as there are protection mechanisms built-in that will force your computer to turn off due to overheating before any damage is done. If the fan ever gets stuck (which it shouldn't) all you will have to do is a full shutdown of the computer, wait 5 seconds and turn it back on (this resets Embedded Controller memory).

Nah, it will not void your warranty. In fact, I feel like if we don't get that fan under control anytime soon you're probably going to smash your computer to pieces which surely will void the warranty ;).

I took a look at your DSDT table and EC memory dump and I have some great news! You can use NBFC with Asus Zenbook UX31A profile to control your fan! Get NBFC and use it with Asus Zenbook UX31A config from HERE and you should be good to go.

Let me know how it works!

It's nice, thank you very much :) Hope for good results :) As I understand it's not necessary for a fan to spin at 1900rpm with 45C CPU temperature ALL THE TIME..
Can you tell me how long does it take to raise the temperature from 45C to 65C when fan is running at 0 % :) I want to compare to make sure everything is ok..

I have selected Zenbook UX31A option.

Also, why the fan can not spin at 1000 rpm (example) with 45C, Im a little bit concerned about hot bottom :(

No, it is not necessary. I don't know how long it will take because it depends on what you do on the computer. If you run a very CPU intensive application then it will reach 65C in roughly 10 seconds. The time it takes for the temperature to rise doesn't matter. As long as it is below like 90C you will be fine.

The way NBFC controls the fan may not make it possible to make it spin at 1000 rpm (there could be no such speed option, because actual speed control is very limited by the way it works). You better ask the NBFC developer in the thread where you downloaded NBFC. He may be able to help you.

I never even used NBFC. Contact developer in that thread or read the manual included with the program. That's the best answer I can give you.
