Found a cheap Xeon X3380 chip on ebay so hey I bought it and swapped out my old Q9650 :) For those that don't know the X3380 is a desktop LGA socket 775 Xeon quad chip that runs 3.16ghz at 9.5x multi. In other words a bit of a beast!

Installation was easy. Took me less than half and hour from power off - upgrade - power on :)

I did some Wprime runs at both stock and at a jaw dropping 3.5ghz!

It took much testing to get up to 3.5ghz and interestingly I needed only 1.2V to run 3.45ghz but to break the 3.5ghz barrier I had to up the voltage to 1.225V to avoid a BSOD under stress testing. I think the reason is fsb limitations so lots of voltage needed to keep it stable. Here are screenshots showing the temp differences between 1.2 and 1.225V under load.

To put things into perspective I also ran Wprime on the Q9650 before removing it at 3ghz and 3.2ghz. The improvements are quite noticeable with the X3380.

Needless to say I think i have reason to be happy with the results :D to hit such a clock speed in a 15.4" four year old laptop on a non-extreme quad for 150 pounds isn't too shabby..!

Haha it has always been negligible. 1 hour at the max :p with screen brightnesss turned right down. On full power you cannot operate on battery there isn't enough power lol

Anyways just modded case a little bit should cut temps at least a few degrees :)
