Was just playing Global Agenda and had the frames dip and stay at 10 or so fps. I tried opening another game, and same framerates. I checked with HWMonitor and my GPU (260M) temps were at 98C+ o_o

That's not a good temp is it? I have an unmodded and unOCed G51vx-rx05. What can I do to drop those temps?

    EDIT:
Playing another game and I hit a max of 109C. Not good.

Those temps are too high, which is why you are having performance dips. First clean your notebook as you probably have quite some dust build up on your machine.

Your temps should be between 90 and 102C when gaming tops. So... simply clean your machine and get a cooler in case your ambien temperature is high.

Alrighty, I opened it up and cleaned the GPU fan area (there didn't seem to be any dust though o_o). I'm gonna try running another game and see what happens. Its also propped up now (it was previously flat on a wooden desk).

If its still getting to hot, what would you recommend? Does the thermal paste/tape need to be reapplied? If so, where, and what kind of tape/paste do I need to get (never done this before).

Also, do you think it would be worth it for me to do the copper plate mod? ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/414147-grab-copper-drill-now.html) If so, links to the copper and the tape/paste needed would be awesome.

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it!

    EDIT:
Been playing for 30 min or so and max temp is 90C (propped up, no cooler, just cleaned out). Much better, though still not the best. What is a more reliable way to stress test for heat benchmarking?

    Are these any good?

    and

Or should I just stick with these?

Personally, I'd get a new backplate from Asus estore (so you don't void your warranty) and make a few holes in it so the fan can breath. Also, get yourself a laptop cooler. I recommend the NZXT Cryo LX or the Zalman NC2000.

I don't think reapplying the thermal paste is a good idea for you because you've never done it before. If it's not done properly, you could have more heat issues than what you originally had. That said, if you still wish to reapply the thermal paste, you could get some IC diamond 7, it's really good stuff b/c it has diamonds in it :D

It depends on how much you value your laptop temperatures. If you don't mind gaming with a slightly warmer laptop, then probably not. The time invested for the mod would likely outweigh the benefits. On the other hand if you have time to kill and want a fun project, then go for it.

You can use graphics specific benchmarking such as furmark and 3D mark softwares.

    Thanks for the reply.

So as long as I'm staying under 90C I'll be fine? If thats the case, I won't worry about modding my pc.

    Yet. :D

Personally, I don't know how it is possible to stay below 90C at all because the fan actually ramps up only after you hit >90C on G51Vx. I have tested it many many times. There is no way to make fan ramp up any earlier than 90C. After 90C is reached the fan kicks in full power and keeps it at that temperature +/- 2 degrees.

The low 90s is miles better than 100s.

Hey, try taking out the smart-card holder above your USB slots on the left side. It creates an extra GPU vent.

Did that. :D Thanks to your guide.

Played BC2 for nearly 3 hours straight and the GPU temp immediately after I closed the game was 65C.

If you ever end up changing the thermal paste, get some ICD7. It reduced my GPU temps by 11C. Can't stress enough how good that stuff is..
