Hello to the wonderful Asus community. I just want to let everyone know how much I appreciate all of your help and input over the last few weeks. I had alot of questions since I am new to the Asus world and laptop world in general. I really am thankful for NR as it gave me ton's of insight and also led me to the Asus name which I had never seen or even heard of before. All of you have been so helpful and have given me great answers helping me in my decision.

Finally yesterday afternoon I made my big move in taking the hard earned money I had saved up and bought the F8sa-x2 from newegg.com. I literally have consumed my life for the last month with laptops and feel I made the perfect choice for what I was wanting. I can't wait for it to get here and start getting involved in the Asus community.

As for the question, I am wanting suggestions on memory. The F8 only comes with 1 gig and I would like to purchase another 2 gig for the other slot. I was wondering what you would recommend me purchasing. Is there really a huge difference in the quality of memory available? If so what are they? Also if possible should I try and get ddr3 instead of ddr2? is it worth it or will it even work side by side with the 1g ddr2 already in it?

I would have purchased it through newegg when purchasing the laptop, however we have a pretty good store in town (microcenter) and I just thought it would be a lot more fun (instead of everything coming at once) to go to the store when the laptop comes in and pick up the memory while getting a few other accesories.

I plan on doing some searching in the mod section as well. I just wanted to ask my fellow Asus owners your opnions. I will let everyone know when my F8arrives and I will join the community in taking all the pics and putting up a review as a newer person in the laptop/computer world.

    Thanks again.

    -Jamie

Hard to say without knowing how much your local store sells for. Patriot brand is recommended for one of extremetech.com's desktop builds and goes for $32 or so (after rebate) at newegg this week.

I don't have much experience personally beyond Crucial, which hasn't died on me yet (~$45 at newegg).

The chronic "what memory should I buy" question..... That's OK, though :).

DDR3 memory *will not* fit in a DDR2 slot, so you can't use it. Just be sure to match type of memory (DDR2 667, PC-5300 in the F8, I think), and stick with one of the major manufacturers. You'll find many opinions about whose memory is better and why, but just stick with the rule above and you'll be fine ;).

Hi. Congratulations for your new laptop, I hope you enjoy it and that it'll be worth the wait and your hard-earned money. :)

After you're done with fixing up the hardware, you might want to take a look at my Vista optimization guide for ASUS notebooks (signature link), to get things running smoothly.

I second the advice that any major-manufacturer RAM will do fine, I don't expect any difference between them that might be felt by the end-user, except perhaps reliability -- even that is a big IF.

    jlcamp7,

I'm thinking about buying the same laptop.... could you confirm for me what screen resolution it has and does it have a functional media card reader? Thanks!!

I don't have it in posession yet (it is showing up as arriving in town today, so I am assuiming either within the next few hours or if not definately some time tomorrow. However from a lot of research that I made before purchasing the laptop here are the answers to your two questions:

-The screen is a WXGA 1200x800. I know some others were stating how the newest model of Asus has a higher resolution but I had a budget I had to work with and you flat out can't beat the specs of this thing for the price!

-I know it does have a card reader located above the dvd drive. However I can't tell you what all cards(other than the obvious ones) it reads yet.

When I get mine in and open it then I will be happy to confirm an answer regarding the card reader and will also give you my opinion on the quality of the screen.
