    I'm still having problems with my GPU temps. I've reapplied paste (Artic Silver 5), added heatsinks, and will drill holes in the backplate soon.

    However, my GPU still seems to be hotter than everyone elses. I hit 100C after less than 30 seconds of Furmark Extreme Burning Mode.

    What else can I do? Should this be worrying me? I seem to idle at 75C for a while after a cold boot, but after having the computer on all day it idles in the low 80s.

    Something is wrong with your laptop, either the heatsink is not properly installed or there is hardware problem.

    Mine idles @ ~50C and load @ ~85-90C.

    Is there anything I can do? I guess I can try reapplying the paste again, but I don't think that'll do anything. I'll also add more copper blocks and drill the holes. Hopefully that'll help a little bit. :(

    What program is a good one to monitor temps? I'll install it tonight and let you know what mine is running at. I'm interested to see what my temps are...

    the G50 i bought refurbished has the same idle and load temps and i just sent it back for RMA, my issue was the fan though.. the fan was almost worn out and wasn't spinning up fast enough.. i don't know if its possible to read the fan's RPMs but i'd look into that.

    mine has the same symptoms though, idles at 75 and loads to 102C+ very quickly.

    when i was looking at it was really contemplating that a good solution to add some airflow would be to move your HDD to the second slot and add another fan in the 1st HDD bay with some ventilation for air intake to try and just push some more air towards the normal cooling fan.

    Well, gaming it doesn't seem to go over 90C (unless I stay too long at menu screens - I get up to 1500 fps and that seems to heat up my GPU fast :D ). Its just in furmark.

    My CPU is fine now that I undervolted it and replaced the paste, though I do want to upgrade it to a T9900 in 2 or 3 years.

    During light games (RPGs, 2D games, etc), my GPU seems to stabilize in the mid 70s, though sometimes hitting the 80s. Its in more hardware intensive games (FPS specifically) that my temps really go up - stabilizing in the 80s and sometimes hitting 90C or so.

    From all of your feedback, I'm thinking I need to get a drill and then add the copper plates as soon as possible.

    @H-Street:
    That HDD moving idea is interesting. Do you know if anyone has added a fan to the 1st HDD bay and got a decrease in temps? Is it even possible to do that?

    @bisklimpkit:
    I use HWMonitor. :D

    looking at fans there is a 9mm fan here

    5VDC MINI-BLOWER, 45MM X 45MM | AllElectronics.com

    going to order a few to play around with.

    if you wanted to i imagine you could even power it from the sata power port

    i believe the max height of the drive bay is 10mm with a 100mmx60mm length x width

    Hmm. If you do, let me know. I'll order some as along as I know what I'm doing. :D

    Ive noticed sometimes the fan on my laptop won't turn on until it hits about 84C on idle. Then start cooling down to about 60C. Not often but it used to worry me. Generally the fan is slightly on when idle keeping my GPU at about 55-60C. Maybe the problem isn't the fan but the temperature monitor in the laptop?

    Is it downclocking at idle? I had tons of issues with drivers that wouldn't downclock on the G51, most wouldn't, only found a couple that did.

    Watch the clocks, they should drop after a few seconds of sitting idle at the desktop. If they don't, that's part of why it idles so hot... mine would idle 20+ degrees hotter on drivers that didn't downclock.

    Also, I never could get AS5 to work right with my G51 heatsink, I had to use MX-3 and run a bead down the die and let the heatsink seat into it and spread it as needed. AS5 never made a proper contact as the heatsink sat a little too far off the die.

    Good luck! Would be curious on your idle clocks speeds though, that very well could explain idle temps.

    Pluberus, if you would like to lower your temperatures in idle then look at the guide in my signature that I have just put together.

    As for the load temps I will say that I can also hit 100 on my G51VX-X3A, but not in 30 seconds. I, however, have 67 degrees in my room, so this could be a reason for that.

    Well I'm idling at 65C now. Stock clocks, no backplate mod. Just a 2 or 3 copper blocks and no drill holes.

    I'm thinking my ambient temperature has a huge affect on this. At the end of the day, I seem to idle in the 70s, and this is in my computer room where it ends up pretty hot.

    When I hit 100C because of 1500 FPS menu screens, I drop back down to the 70s/80s pretty quick when I actually log into the game and have my FPS at 60 or so.

    Furmark makes me hit 100C really quick, but I never see that temp in everyday computing (anymore) unless I forget and let my PC idle at the menu/login screens for various games.

    You hit the nail on the head. This was/is my problem. Powermizer fixes this. :D

    Thanks, and +rep.
