1) Punctuation is a good thing...
2) Standard 802.11g is 54Mb/s. Your Internet connection isn't even close to that speed, so the bottleneck (the slowest point between nodes) is not your wireless router...
3) Getting a faster wireless connection between your computer and your router will only improve your bandwidth between the computers on your local LAN. Sharing files will be faster, but surfing the web will not...

yes absolutely. cable internet doesnt even get close to the 11 mbs of wireless b.
wireless g was an entirely worthless technology only good for sharing files with computers that are within 50 feet of you.
If you want extended range, go back to wireless b.
I know Im a war dialer ive used hotspots all over the country. Ive connected to the same spots with the same card and the range in b is always farther.
I dont have the name brand handy but all the long range cards they are wireless b only. Its like a reversal, the really good stuff is actually the older one. -
-
yes this is pretty simple and i did realize this. so for the times of transfering files the 108mbps super g would come in handy thats all. -
so now you are saying i should go back to 802.11b?
as it has further range then 802.11g?
my netgear super g router seems to have better range then the old miscrosoft B router i was using. -
I have a Pre-N Belkin router that I'm using with 802.11g notebooks. The range is excellent and if I ever get some Belkin 802.11n adapters I'll have faster access to the NAS that's connected to the Belkin.
-
Im not certain but it is that way for me.
What Im talking about is that wireless b has a longer range in general. Your hardware in specific I cant tell you.
If the new router is better its better.
In asia where they never adopted wireless G they make some incredible wireless B products that get imported here. Like wireless notebook cards with 1000 foot range. Again I dont have the links handy but today is new puter day so I can get back to you.
The BEST wireless computer stuff as far as range is the stuff Im talking about : asian market wireless B only.
wireless G is already in betamax stage soon to disapear. -
For a future model id like to see builtin GPS (the R2H has this, but I'd like to see it in the smaller sized laptops), A plug for attatching an external wi-fi antenna if needed!
A laser cutter, heat seaking missile cabability, and inbuilt coffee maker. -
5) Plush drive bay so that optical drives can be easily replaced.
4) DVI-out
3) Illuminated keyboard
2) Thinner 14" form factor.
1) Top-of-the-line graphics. -

well i used the ms b router for many years and i got it for free so i figured i'd upgrade at least to G which is what i have now. returned the super G.
i like the net gear g router and it works with all my g and b devices so its fine.
was going to see what router verizon fios gives you but now i think i many not get their internet service as i may only be trying out the fios tv service to take advantage of free install and test it then cancel and go back to later down the road when its improved as i hear right now comcasts dvr and stuff is better.
so yeah was going to get free router from verizon fios and was interested to see what it would be but dont want to go through the trouble of changing isp/email etc only to possibly cancel it. -
isn't dvi almost the same as vga. a digital video connection that doenst include sound. id rather see hdmi out.
illuminated keyboard is definitely a good call and quite neccesary at times.
i'd like better rebate dept from asus.
i sent mine in back in oct. called some time after that to check up and they were able to l ocate it , said they had it, it was validated and would be sent out the end of Nov.
never received it and called today only for them to have no clue , say they dont have it, got disconnected plenty, transfered to the right dept. and then have to wait for call back next tuesday from some other lady that might know better
i will follow up and make them send me the
$200 but its going to be a lot of trouble and might still not get it.
they are a disorganized mess. i dont think i'll pay double to buy from them again when i can get an equal if not better in some ways product from HP or Sony (my chain store brands of choice) for much less especially with the deals that go on. -

HDMI would be nice, but I don't see it happening for 2-3 years. Vista requiring protecting paths for high def content might speed it up some.
If Asus started putting HDMI and eSATA on laptops *now*, they could make quite a few sales I bet. -
1. refresh the W3J
2. add the dvi-port or
3. make a dockingstation with a dvi-port for the w3
4. switch fn-key and ctrl-key
5. bring the refreshed version to germany (the w3j isn't available in germany)
-
personally id like to see some BOA models with mid-high end ensemble quality. for instance if i could have gotten the w3j chassis and screen BOA id be very happy. as is im torn what im going to do in a few years when i get a new notebook. I wanto get asus's full on sexy quality of their high end notebooks, and seeing as im wearing off the paint on the palrest of my s96j (i just use it that much) i could really use some of the benefits of a high end ensemble. On the other hand, i dont know if i would ever buy another notebook that isnt a powerpro just because the warranty and the people behind it are so amazing.

1) Make a PERFECT notebook with ALL the features in it. Combine build quality + top performance + appearance etc. in ONE package, so ppl wouldnt havta struggle choosing b/w W series, V series, and A series. Wouldn't it be nice to have a completely carbon fiber laptop or all-aluminum laptop w/ a 7700go ? In fact, put magnesium alloy and aluminum on every series, especially the A8Js. The G1 looks pretty rock solid already, actually.
2) Get rid of the light leakage on LCDs and put WIDESCREEN on EVERY laptop. Enough with the XGAs!
3) Get the Audio DJ working on all models! and let it boot dvds w/o booting OS and provide remote
4) absolutely flex-less keyboards w/ all spill proof on every notebook
5) 1.3 MP cameras on ALL models, seriously. -
There were models that were both Ensemble and Built On. The M5/Z33 and the W3/Z63, for instance were ensembles and built ons, respectively.
Asus ended this practice to differentiate the two lines and allow for building of the Asus brand name... -
1. a 12 inch notebook with no or external cd/dvd drive
2. no more 1024x768 resolution on 12 inch screens, at least 1280x800
3. eSATA, external drives
4. docking station for 12 inch notebook
5. dvi output -

W3J doesn't need dvi, I 'm using VGA out on 20" LCD and see no quality loss, but on the other hand HDMI is much better idea.
-
but if you want to hook up a 24" 1920*1200 lcd you most likely can see a difference. And since you can easily use an dvi to vga adapter on dvi I just don't see why I have to do with vga.
hdmi respectively dvi with hdcp would be nice but only makes sense with a BlueRay or HD-DVD drive. Otherwise you could just use the dvi and the optical out. -

I know many would have bought the W3J or would have reconsidered it atleast if it had a DVI port. VGA vs DVI, like many know you will not see the difference, but that's not really the point (bigger screens and graphic designers would want DVI). The W3J is an older chasis, and has not been drastically modified to fit in a DVI port.
HDMI would be great since you get Digital signals and also sound output with 1 cable. -
Illuminated keyboards for all models. It's seriously sexy and very handy in the dark.
-
Asus called me today and did find my rebate and are finally sending months later.
I should have asked for a free carrying case for my v6j for the delay and problem at my expense which was strictly their fault.
i'm annoyed the v6j didnt come with one and the v1j does. -
i have to re emphasize the importance of adding the simple feature of light up keyboard. just add an on/off button to it. but ppl often use a laptop in low light conditions and it would come in great handy.
i use a light up keyboard on my desktop pc but haven't seen many laptops with this option. i guess you can just use an external liht up full size keyboard. -
Ive wanted this feature forever:
an off button. Power off.
So that when the machine freezes you dont have to unplug it and pull out the battery. -
stamar: You could hold the power button down for a few seconds? It works on every other computer I know of.
I want a dual graphics system on an updated Santa Rosa DX10 W7J. It doesn't seem all that difficult. Possibly, I wouldn't mind an underclocked midrange card like in the MacBook Pro, even if it got that hot. It would be a nice option, and with the thicker frame of the Asus, it would even have space for a fan. -
LENOVO QUALITY KEYBOARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry for the caps, but sheesh, come on, the keyboard ALONE sells Lenovo, how about spending the extra $10 for one of those NMB or Chicony keyboards or finding a manufacturer who makes them with similar feel and quality.
Aside from that, I'd like to see some more models with the sophisticated all black look of the W7J. Those look 10X better than that ugly A8 model they seem so in love with.
If Asus had Lenovo keyboards and all looked like the W-series, how could you justify buying anything else? You couldn't. -
more brushed aluminum finish and carbon fiber chassis
hdmi
better built in microphones [more strategically placed]
better sound card [not talking about the speakers] -
I would like a true artists/graphic designer/photographer notebook. How many times on the "What notebook should I buy" board do we see people say they don't play games, they just do CAD or Photoshop.
I don't want to pay extra for the hottest graphics card. I want a laptop like the G1 - but put the money spent on the upgraded GPU into the best possible display. Have a USB port near the front to plug in a tablet. Must have DVI.
And hey, good speakers wouldn't hurt. My 4 year old Toshiba has great speakers; why not ASUS?
Oh, and have a dummy piece of plastic to use in place of a battery. The battery is heavy and I unplug my notebook maybe once a month. Why do I need a battery on my lap all the time? -
oh, and I second the backlit keyboard. great idea! -
1) Fingerprint readers built in every model
2) 802.11n w/ bluetooth in every model
3) More powerful GPU's for 12" and 13.3" notebooks
4) The option to customize Asus notebooks from dealers with out voiding the Global warranty!
5) Higher quality barebone notebooks. Ones like the W3 and V2 -
1) HSDPA
2) DVI-D or HDMI out
3) Brushed aluminum finish and carbon fiber chassis
4) Better quality keyboard
5) Not the best GPU but with decent memory say 512MB -
1) Even sleeker design.
2) Brushed aluminum finish and carbon fiber chassis
3) Better quality keyboard with numpad if it's a 17inch model. Backlit keyboard for luxurious class. -
1) Fix the **** the battery wear issue
2) Stop using elcheapo matshita crap drives. We pay dearly for our notebook. Why not use something more decent like a pioneer or a nec? How much more would it cost? $10? $20? $30? We will pay for it...
3) IPS screen
4 )Carbon fiber and aluminium
5) Better GPUs. Marketing a Go7700 lappy (G1) as a gaming rig is an insult to gamers.

anyone else having trouble using the Asus Vista upgrade site?
https://upgradeweb.moduslink.com/vista/Asustek
I get to the part where you put in your name, address, serial #, purchase date etc and hitting next just doesnt' work
nice to having a working website to order Vista as a discounted upgrade for recently purchased Asus notebooks.
unless its just not working until the 30th/31st when it comes out. i would think you could order it now though. -
-
1. 17" Screen
2. Firewire 400 & 800 with a Texas instruments chipset
3. 2 x Express card slots
4. 2x internal Sata HD
5. removable Graphics card -
laptops cant have powered firewire ports. The power will suck the battery dry instantly.
They do make like pcmia ones and that is what happens. But it wont be standard on a laptop -
Brushed aluminum finish and carbon fiber chassis
No more leather! (what were they thinking????)
More models with nvidia graphics (drivers much better than ati for linux users)
More models and greater availability in UK
If you must integrate webcams, don't make them too large (like W5F) -
I went thru this thread and tried to compile the requested features into a poll so they can be "voted" on - polls are limited to 30 chices so I might have left a few off
heres the poll thread:
