I recently bought a barebones Z63a and assembled it myself.
I installed the following:
- Intel Pentium M-750 1.86GHZ S478-M 533FSB Dothan 2MB Cache 90NM
- Samsung Spinpoint M Series 80GB IDE ATA100 5400RPM 8MB 12MS 2.5IN
- INTEL PRO/WIRELESS 2915 MINI-PCI 802.11A/B/G 54MBPS WIRELESS LAN CARD
- Kingston ValueRAM PC2-4200 512MB DDR2 200PIN SODIMM CL4 Memory (2 Sticks so total ram is 1024 MB)
The assembly went off without a hitch and was much easier then I expected. I found it easier then assembling a desktop pc. I have installed all the drivers, updated the bios, and updated windows completely. When I put the computer to sleep or put it into hibernate and try to wake it up it fails. The hard drive starts to seek and the power light turns on and the CPU fan start to Blow but the screen is blank and the computer is completely unresponsive. I have to turn it off by holding on the power button. I brought it back to the place where I bought it and they tested all the components and they were alll good. They came back saying to me this was caused by the Execute Disable Bit function I had enabled in the bios when I was first setting up the computer. If the Execute Disable Bit function is disabled in the bios the laptop wakes up fine from sleep mode. Asuss notebook tech support is nothing like their motherboard support and they keep saying to me that I should send it back to them which i am not wanting to do.
I am wondering if anyone has had this problem or has a solution. The store said it could probably be fixed with a bios update but since there isnt one I am open for suggestions.

Well, Execute Disable Bit is disabled by default... do you require that it be enabled?
I've known about this issue and I've avoided enabling it...
Yes, it is supposed to be "beneficial" I suppose, but it doesn't really make a difference unless you need it to be enabled. -
I dont need it to be enabled but it is a nice feature. I just wasnt sure is this was a known issue. Do you mean it is a issue with asus it self or the feature itself is known to have compatability issues with many laptops?
Thanks for the speedy reply. -
well, i haven't read about it or seen that feature in any other laptop... i've only dealt with a hanful, personally.
The previous Asus laptop I owned did not have this feature.
This is a known issue with the Z63a model... and I'd advise all Z63a owners to leave it disabled until a further BIOS update addresses this. However, I don't see how it is really beneficial in any way... it's not like Windows utilizes this feature, as far as I know. -
Thank you very much. I guess ill keep my eyes peeled for a bios update. You have been a great help. Atleast I now know im not the only one with this issue. Both Asus and NCIX have said they havent seen anything like this before.
Kinda off topic but I live in vancouver also. Do you work at a computer store or something or are u just good with computers? -
LOL... no, I just spend a lot of time on these forums and other forums too. I consider myself a computer geek... I wish I worked at a computer store. I applied at Anitec and didn't get hired...oh well! I guess my acquired computer knowledge doesn't mean much in the real working world. At least I can be of help here!
Btw, you're welcome. It's almost nice to see more fellow Vancouverites on these forums
EDIT: btw, looks like we have a similar configuration for the Z63a... nice! I wish I had your CPU...lol. I was broke when I bought this -
ya it is quite a good processor. The whole set up was like 1763 with tax so im happy. Im 16 so i guess I can be classified as a computer geek in the making. i just find computer hardware and software so easy. Well apparently except for Execute Disable Bit, but that is minor thing. It is amazing how much money you can save by building computers yourself, and make money off building them for other people
-
that's not too bad.
I got my configuration for $1641 (including tax) and I didn't have to assemble it myself... so the deal I got was pretty good too. -
where do u buy your parts from? i opted to assemble it myself just for the experiance. I must say that it was extremly easy. It took me 1 hour from first screw taken out to last screw put in. iv built about 10 pc's in my lifetime and none of them have come anywhere near the assembly simplicity of this laptop.

I buy my parts from various places... but this computer was purchased at Vastech on Main St.
I've never put together a laptop... but I have opened them up to upgrade/observe. I would agree they appear easier to assemble than desktops...
