I was curious... if the W3a and the Z63a are indeed the same machine, they should have the same BIOS, correct?
Yet Asus has different BIOSes released for each respective version.

Has anyone tried to flash their Z63a with a W3a BIOS?

hi, i have z63a, the machine is great with nothing wrong.
i don't upgrade the BIOS because i didn't see any problem, might be later if something wrong about this, let me see the flash BIOS's description.

It should not work. Those are different machines. Asus is extremely conservative when it comes to bios. I mean you couldnt even flash the m6n bios onto the m6ne. I would be extremely surprised if this was posible. But give it a try worst case scenario you have it covered under warranty......or not ;)

Well the W3a and the Z63a have the same motherboard... infact the Z63 motherboard is stamped with the the insignia W3A.... But at the same time there shouldn't be a need for it because the US site is kept updated by Taiwan (Taiwan controls all the websites for Asus).... if they don't, there is usually a reason for it... but then agian I wouldn't update a bios that didn't already need it (ie: new ram doesn't work with current bios, major things like that).

The M6n and M6ne (besides the upgrade in the gpu), actually had some different parts even though they were technically the same chipset and that's why the bios' were different.

yeah...my Z63a has "W3000" on the bottom of the notebook instead of "Z6300" which I have seen...so I was wondering if flashing the W3A bios would work or not.
I have a feeling the W3a BIOS has that cool "Asus" logo on the bios bootup screen...lol.

Oh, that would be awesome!!! Please let me know if you dare try it - and how it works out.

Could anything bad happen by trying?

Sorry my mistake i didnt notice you said w3a vs z63a. Though you said w3v. It is the same notebook and same bios. If you read the sku on the external box it actually says "w3a". As for the m6n and m6ne. Though the bios are different the parts were the same. The funny part was that asus never changed the vga card on it or ati pulled a fast one. The ati 9700 scored the same as the 9600 and was reported as ati 9600 by various utils. people paid 50$ for no reason. I never did find what was the advantage of the 9700 over the 9600 but i am sure its there in the whitepaper

Yeah...they're essentially the same GPU... except the 9700 is clocked higher (and is more stable at even higher speeds)

So we CAN safely update the BIOS to the latest W3A BIOS? Do you suppose it will then display the Asus logo at startup?

I haven't tried it yet... but if you download the W3A bios and then load it up with WinFlash, it does NOT display an error message and claims that the BIOS image is the correct format.

I think it'll work... but I don't want to be the guinea pig in this experiment :p

Sorry - I should have specified - it is a quote from The Simpsons. I believe Nelson (the bully) says that line, then everybody agrees. :p

    Kinda like the line:

Homer: (after putting on glasses he found in the washroom) The square of a side of an isosceles triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the remaining sides.

Guy in Bathroom Stall: That's a right triangle you idiot!

    Hehehe..my god.. I'm quoting Simpsons episodes in a Asus notebook forum... -_-;

IT WORKS!!! I flashed the W3A BIOS on my Z63A and it is fine! The ASUS logo does pop up at the very beginning of startup - cool intro.

Anyway - just so you all know - it is safe!

Just make sure it is the W3A - NOT W3V!

Not yet. I loaded it it about an hour ago. I had the latest Z63A BIOS loaded, and the fan speeds feel the same. I'm currently at 54 C and 1600 rpm. The only real change has been the Asus logo - which is reason enough to change! Soooo cool! Well, maybe it is just kind-of cool, but makes it more "Asus" than before...

Haha... I know what you mean! It kinda feels generic without the Asus bios logo..

when I get home, I'll try the same :D

UPDATE: I flashed the latest W3A bios... worked!
Now I see the infamous "ASUS" logo at the bios screen. Other than that, no noticable changes...

Congrats! I was pretty nervous when flashing the BIOS, but I just couldn't figure out why it would be a problem. I honestly bet the only real difference is the "Asus" logo at startup.

Aurora - next time YOU get to be the guinea pig! ;)
