Some asked about this and I'm ready to report my progress. First time using linux.

I choose ubuntu 5.04 because I heard it was good. And it is.
    My setup:
    Z70V
    1.73 GHZ P-m
    Intel 2915
    Hitachi 5K80
    DVD RW

Things that didn't work on initial install:
    card reader
    sound
    wireless

the card reader I think is hopeless since its not USB
sound worked after reading ubuntu wiki on alsa
wireless won't work on initial installation, but once installed it works fine just can't logon to WPA routers.

Everything is else is fine or not tested. screen is fine running at max res. I did not update ATI driver because I don't play games on linux. Secondly, this also have a winxp installed.

So far everything is working fine now, and using it right now.

You can just download the Live CD and try it out. Some times they'll have the drivers on the disk for you. You can also try KUBUNTU also. I've tried it on my Asus Z70v, but didnt have all the drivers for it, didnt feel like searching, so I switched back to Windows XP. I dont care what anyone says, it's like 95% of the world and you can find so many apps, games, and support for it without even trying.

ubuntu has the majority of drivers except for the sound driver. That needs to be downloaded and install from ALSA project. Get 1.0.9rc4 seems to fix the scratching problem. Then follow ubuntu instruction, which is under ubuntu wiki, hardware support, soundcards, intel 8x0. Note, don't install the fglrx driver because it doesn't work with the x600. tried two times and no luck.

ubuntu wiki and the unofficial ubuntu guide is an excellent resources page because most of the problems people have already solved.

I've gotten Ubuntu (with Kubuntu added on) installed on my Z70V. ATI fglrx is working, per various instructions on the web (search for Asus and Ubuntu and fglrx, and you'll find M6N variant installations - this worked fine for me). I also solved the sound problem by installing the linux drivers from Realtek, not the way indicated here, but I'm going to look into ALSA tweaking. Finally, there are many web instructions on installing and automating wpa_supplicant, which isn't gui easy, but allows you to connect to a WPA AP. Still in all, I'm waiting for the time when Linux installs on most computers without tweaking, particularly when dealing with ubiquitous components like ATI graphics and Intel wireless cards.

i tried it before, i believe that the drivers doesn't still finalize to test. Some 3rd party drivers won't work because they don't be tested as well. Sometimes, to install the drivers is easy, but sometimes is not. I hope that Linux can support all the drivers soon, or having an updated service pack.......!!

The next version of Ubuntu with the newer Linux Kernel should support Intel wireless out of the box. I think the 2.6.14 kernel integrated the drivers. Ubuntu 5.10 has 2.6.12, so you'll have to wait until the april release (6.04) to get Intel wireless that "Just Works".

I have no idea about any plans to make the ATI/NVIDIA Just Work. They'll never get integrated into Linux proper (the kernel), but perhaps Ubuntu will have them. Unlikely, though.
