    Hi All,

I have a bit of a conundrum. My Z70V is great - I love it to bits, but I have a bit of a problem with freezing. Every so often, the computer will just freeze up, and whatever is on screen just stays there, static. The only way to recover is to shut off completely (by holding the power button). This also happens when I leave the computer in standby for a while... more often than not, I have to shut down manually. Can someone provide me with a list of things I should be checking? Certain drivers? Software? Hardware problems? I've never really developed an effective system in dealing with freezing, so this should be useful.

    Thanks so much,
    Sandeep

I have the same problem as well. Sometimes the computer is fine and won't restart randomly....other times it will restart every few minutes. I thought it might have something to do with CHC, but i uninstalled that and I still have the problem. I'm kinda worried because I rely on the laptop to write reports and take notes in class. I would be crushed if I lost work.

Where did you purchase your z70v from? I bought it from istnc. I will probably send them a message if i can't resolve this myself.

    1.86, 80GB 5400 Seagate, 1 GB RAM (1 Stick), x600, WIN XP Pro

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Can be caused by bad/incompatible ram, overclocking, bad drives and even a bad motherboard. Your dealer should be equiped with the proper knowledge to test by phone without sending it back

Sansdeep, did you built the computer yourself? I would check the RAM, after that, I'd check if it's overheating too. Tipota, did you do a clean install with WinXP? NTFS format? Also for both of you guys, did you install everything on the CD provided? Including the INF update and ATK utility.
As for me, I did a clean Windows install (NTFS format), installed the latest drivers on the ASUS site (support.asus.com). I've also got the latest Bios update too. Running quite fine for me. No lockups here, I haven't seen anyone else posting any problems with lock ups.

"Lockups" are never caused by software. There are 2 types of lockups. Those where you can move the mouse and those where its completely dead in the air. If you guys can move your mouse then its software if not then its hardware. Proper testing and right parts are essential. My m5n locks up on reboot. As soon as it hits the windows welcome screen and the services start loading it just hangs. Ending certain threads and refreshing solves it. Thats why i leave it on standby instead of turning it off. I dont want to format. The problem is bearshare and whtever is left of it after i removed it.

The OS was installed by istnc. Not sure what file system. How would I check? I did not install eveything on the CD. Some programs and utilities were already installed and I installed a few as needed. What do the INF and ATK updates do/correct? Also, how would I check BIOS version?

I don't believe it is an issue with over heating...system is running under 60 degrees all the time.

Thanks for your and Geared2Play's quick replies.

I cannot movemy mouse at all. I also try to Ctrl+alt+delete and get no response. Starting to think it might be hardware....this makes me worried.

Can be a bad drive or bad ram. Can be the mobo. Start by testing your ram. Ask your vendor to supply instructions on that. Ofcourse formating is a simple solution and is a start for the elimination proccess but in this case i would say its futile if you mouse dont move at all. Your not going to find much help here on this. Your problem needs to be addressed by your dealer. This is not a software related issue in my humble opinion but i can be wrong......tho unlikely :p

I've exeperienced this on a different laptop and the wireless card drivers may be the culprit too. The 2200BG caused this on my lappy until I updated the drivers then it worked like a charm. Make sure you're up to date on those drivers for the wireless cuz that'll do it.

Its posible but unlikely. 2200bg was problem free for us with a few minor exceptions. Never a report of frezeups becuase of the wifi card. All is posible though. Until i have the laptop in my hands or have a crack at phone support i am just giving a probable cause. 2200bg causeing the problem is posible but not probable.

I've had the exact same problem. It's been happening a lot more recently when I'm planning Far Cry. Usually within an hour. I can still hear some sound (moderately long loop of music, not stuttering) but it's completely locked. Nothing responds. Not CTRL-ALT-DELETE, not pressing the power switch. Not using the Fn-Sleep (Fn-F1). I have to hold the power button for it to work. I've had this happen in other occassions. Specifically, if I'm running Slackware Linux, and run the console program 'worms', it will freeze up at exactly the same point every time. If I wait a little couple minutes, the ascii worms will move once. Then, a couple minutes later they will move again. When I was playing Far Cry, I tried hitting the Wireless On hardware button just to try it, and the Wireless light came on after a little delay. Then, after waiting a little my screen went blue. It was a slight shade darker than the Win95 BSOD blue. At this point the sound has just cut out and after another couple minutes it turns into a black screen. Just too see what would else might happen, I left it like that overnight, but it was still the same black screen when I woke up. I'm going to try 3DMark05 and memtest32 right now. Any other suggested hardware check tools would be appreciated.

nfearnley it could be a number of things, usually hardware related, maybe caused by video drivers.

    Try reinstalling those.
