Hey guys. My keyboard crapped out. Been using it on the kitchen table, kids may have something to do with it. Keys shorting or somthing, random characters on screen. Took everything apart, no sign of liquids in keyboard or elsewhere but I am suspicious. If the kids got liquid in there it must be very little.

Can these be cleaned or should I buy another keyboard? I logged in by plugging in a USB keyboard and can do some work but I get random keyboard strokes appearing. Can I replace it myself? I have assembled parts of the unit myself so I think I could handle the keyboard. Makes me think I should keep a spare on hand as well.

Unit is 6 months old. Don't know if Asus covers this under warranty - I would not consider it their fault and would not want to pawn off my errors on them, but they often go beyond fair. Any suggestions would be great. I would like to get this resolved quickly because it is my business workhorse.

Contact your reseller - all barebones warranty work is covered by them, not Asus. You'll probably want to send it in to be checked out for damage and/or cleaned if liquid got in, because that's a disaster waiting to happen. You could always order a new keyboard and give it a try to see what happens, but random keystrokes when using an external keyboard is concerning.

Keyboard replacement is pretty easy - couple of screws on the bottom and pop the latches with a credit card or small flat screwdriver along the top of the keyboard holding it in, then pull it out. Detach the cable and reverse steps.

You say you see random characters on your screen. Could it be that your keyboard is fine and your LCD isnt?

You also say that when you plug in a secondary keyboard and you still get random characters, (I think that proves that its not your keyboard, and rather your motherboard or screen).

    It could be:

    LCD, motherboard, drivers.

Id check for drivers, and prey its that.

Contact your reseller's tech support. Let them trouble shoot it with you, and then follow their advice from there.
