ok ive got this 8gig nano second generation got it for christmas, and i dont know what to do. When its conected to my laptop everything slows down. I cant open itunes and if i try to it will only open imediatley once the ipod is disconected. If i conect it while itunes is up and running is generally stalls it. Tried it on my bros desktop and it works find. But ive tried everything even a fresh reformat and instal of xp and still no good. I use other devices that work on any of the usb ports i plug them into even a removable dvd burner. the only time its worked and ive been able to sync songs to it is when a whole bunch of stuff on my comptuer crashed. I dont know what to do for the life of me. Anyone have any ideas?? Ive posted on the apple forums as well but though id give the asus guru's a go as well. THanks in advance guys.

There was a problem with iT7 and the 1st gen nano models being recognized by windows when it was released in Sept, which may/not have been fixed with the 2nd gen models. The problem was the itunesservice.exe, which requires a particular XP process to be running else it crashed. My sense was that this cropped up for a lot of pro-am users that tweak their settings.

To find that particular link, you can try searching the Apple nano forum for my handle, corellia16, to find the post with description of the service fix; it's been 5 months and I can't recall exactly what it was. good luck!

if he's on a fresh format then it's unlikely that he tweaked it first.

My ipod video was acting really odd too with very similar results. iTunes would crash sometimes and it would almost never get recognized. I figured something went awry with the ipod so I dug up an old iPod updater (back from before Apple decided it would be a great idea to put EVERYTHING in iTunes without a failsafe) and reset my iPod to factory settings. Works great now.

Problem for you is that the updater went up till about June and the 2nd gen nanos weren't around then.

Try resetting the ipod to factory settings on your bro's, then using a fresh install of the latest iTunes on a fresh (unmodified) install of WinXP and see if that works
