When I play Half-life 2, WoW, etc. I have to play at 1024x600 otherwise after like 30 min of playing the fan speeds up really fast for like 3 sec then goes back to normal fan speed, then after 30 sec it does it again and repeats...

I have the 7200rpm HD that runs at like almost 65 celcius during games so maybe thats contributing to the slowdown?

I just called asus notebook support and they cant think of a reason this is happening besides the 7200rpm HD (which is not approved by asus in this notebook aparantly).

    Also:
    - even at 1024x600 it does the high fan/slowdown but not as much (after like and hour or two and once every 5 min)
    - I have the latest video drivers
    - Clocking down the video card fixes the problem (but whats the point if I cant use it at max? thats why I got this notebook and the 7200rpm HD)
    - Tuning down the processor fixes the problem too, but makes game choppy

When you play video games your powerplay settings should be on high and also your fan should be on constantly.

Your harddrive running that high is not too great, but if it's a Hitachi then I believe I've read that, that's an acceptable temperature.

If you have thirdparty fan controlling programs or something like SpeedFan and changed settings by accident, you should uninstall those programs, but change settings to default before doing so.

    Cheers,
    Mike

During "gameplay" it is very normal for a laptop's fan to speed up and down because it automatically adjusts to temperatures. Like an air conditioner on powersaver; how once your ideal temp is met it shuts. Kind of a similar comparison. As shampoo has said try removing any third party fan controllers. If that still fails you may want to try removing any third party temp monitoring programs as they sometimes like to control fan speeds (Such as AbitEQ).

Also what bios version are you running?
