Hi
I'm wondering about buying a Z70Va...or as it's named here in Europe; the M6Va.
The problem is that I shall also use it while studying and attend lectures. Will this be a problem considered noise wise?
Had a travelmate 8103 for a little while....didn't get to test it really but it seemed very quiet under normal operations. How is the Z70Va vs. Acer Tm 8100 series?
And is it possible to adjust the fans on the Z70Va so they make virtually no noise with programs like fan monitor or something?
Would very much appreciate all the help I can get since the machine here in Norway will cost about 2400 $, and I would like to get the best that money can buy...considered performance, battery and heat and noise.

When you're just surfing the web or leaving the computer idle, the computer should be very quiet. You can use Centrino Hardware Control to adjust the individual components in the laptop so they produce the least amount of heat.
I would think a Centrino laptop would be quiet enough, because it consumes very little power.
There's a review on the Z70VA here . -
Thanks for replying
I have read the test, but didtn't find how much noise it makes in different modes, i.e like just surfing on battery / on ac etc etc. Its really important for me since while I'm in lecture I will need to both write use internet and maybe use programs like Visual basic and such. -
Keep in mind that even though you think a lecture hall is "quiet", the ambient noise level is actually quite high; plus, the fact that you're in a very large room, means that your sound won't travel very far.
The Z70Va should be very quiet (virtually inaudible) in a lecture hall even if the fans are running. -
What about in a virtually quiet room alone just surfing on the internet an such or when gaming?
I'm a bit weary about fan noise -
If you're just surfing the net, fan noise should be very low to non-existent. You will hear the fan periodically, yes, but it shouldn't be running at its highest setting for sure.
And if you undervolt the computer, you should barely hear it at all.
If you're playing games, however, you should be hearing the fan; it shouldn't be too much of a problem... since when you play games, I'll assume that you have sound on! Besides, you wouldn't want your computer to overheat, right? -
I would really like it to be true what you told me, but I have now been reading about some people who got trouble with too much fan noise, even when the computer is idling. So I'm really insecure about if it's a problem with some of the computers or it's only people being picky. I hope it's the first, since people react to noise differently and it may be that I'm one of them. It would have been nice to compare several machines against each other sound wise.
-
"Too much" fan noise is totally subjective. The fans in my Z70va don't bother me in the least.
-
I agree that fan noise is subjective...
you'll never know until you find out for yourself. Don't take the word of others...
With such a powerful machine as the Z70Va (remember that it has an X700 in it!), the fan HAS to be on periocally to keep it from overheating...
even if the fan was audible/on most of the time, I would deal with it...knowing I have such a powerful computer. -
JackBauer can you please tell me a little about the noise level on your machine while surfing, watching dvd, playing etc. Someone should have recorded the fan noise....would be easier then to estimate the noise, since high pitch is much worse than a humming.
-
Mines sound like a regular fan.
Surfing + WiFi + Screen at 3rd-4th lowest = I turn the fan off and its runs at a cool 45 degrees
DVD + Highest Screen = I turn the fan to 45%, if there is no sound you can barely hear it but sound is on so that doesn't bother me. Temp at 39degrees to 45 degrees on different areas.
Gaming = Fan on 75% and 85%, its audible but the game sounds or WinAmp usually covers it
Doesn't bother me much -
That Sounds Great!!
But do you do the same with all fans? Isn't it three of them, cpu, gpu and case? And what program do you use?
Sounds very much like it's some unfortunately few who has got a faulty fan with their Z70Va. They described the noise as unberable -
You could always use SpeedFan to reduce the speed of the fan to a more bearable level IF it is that bothersome...
-
Think I'm gonna buy me that Asus, just hope I get a quiet one.
Get it quit cheap compared to the specs:
2,13 ghz, 512 mb ddr2 533 mhz, 80 giga 5400 rpm, 15.4 1680x1050.
The total price will be 2293 US dollar.
By the way, very nice review Coriolis -
seems to be a lot of discussion around this same topic about the fan. hmm
-
It does get a bit hot and loud but remember, its a x700 in a frickin slim 15.4"!
Honestly, there is no perfect machine, and I know that, so I can just blow away the flaws and inhale all the good stuff -
But I'm wondering if it's possible to undervolt the gpu and still have the same performance but less heat and power hungry.
As long as the machine keeps quiet then it should, and makes a little noise when really used it's ok by me. -
CHC can undervolt the GPU a bit, from 350mhz to 300mhz, then more if you run on battery
-
I was more thinking of the same way as you do with the cpu...give it less power and voltage, but still performing the same with the same stability. With the same result like the cpu...less power hungry and colder.
-
i have been asking about this for the 6600 for some time. but i'm afriad i don't have enough hardware knowledge to come up with a solution. i have seen volt mods on desktop nvidia boards.
wouldn't it be nice if we could dynamically clock it (increase voltage and overclock for gaming and underclock and undervolt for battery competative with an intel onboard!).... heck, we got the GPU temperature which we didn't think was possible, perhaps someone could write a BIOS that could do this too...
also, i just wanted to clarify coriolis, when you surf and all, does your machine turn ALL FANS off? i.e. is it dead silennt except for the hard drive? My z71v never has the CPU fan spinning (only after i quit a game, i notice it has been on but it quickly spins down.... my CPU idles at 37-42 and peaks around 55 deg C). But my GPU fan is ALWAYS on (but very quiet and barely audible when idling). I have turned it off before, but my GPU will creep up well past 70 deg C. -

Not again. Its quite. Its so quite a silent but deadly one will sound 10 times louder. Seriously. This is a well rounded unit. Noise complaints are comming from VERY VERY extremely sensetive people.
-
I can control the fans, but normally, i set the fans to 10%-20% or so when I just surf. At 800mhz it normally stays at.

Coriolis
Are you using chc for fan control? Or what? I tried it but didnt work on the one i tested. -
Nope, using SpeedFan.
From what I understand, Fan 1 is the one on the left corner where the GPU is, and Fan 2 is at the top right where the CPU is, right? -
This is when I'm glad I have an M6Ne... where there are less vents, but less fan noise as well
although i doubt the Z70Va fan noise is that bad... probably not even bad at all when compared to what else is out there in the market. -
Yea, exactly.
It's way better then my desktop. Duron processor
I tried running SpeedFan on my Latitude, it crashes everytime it loads heh...
And it gets very very very toasty at the bottom. Maybe because its fanless -
I guess we just have to keep in mind that the majority of people who DO buy ASUS... are knowledgable about computers and have done some research. I guess they just get their hopes up real high and put the Z70Va on a pedestal... thinking that it will be the ultimate machine.
It really is a great machine, without a doubt... but no notebook is perfect! (but the Z70Va is, I'm sure, quite close... :asus: )
EDIT: Yay... my 1000th post is one that shamelessly promotes ASUS...lol. -
I'm pretty sure 80% of my posts are the same
-
just to chime in the fans are not loud at all, just all depends on what you do.....hard core gamming then youve got your headphones on and you wont even be able to hear the fan..... the fan thing is really not an issue with this fine piece of equipment.... GO :asus: I LOVE YOUR NOTEBOOKS!!!
-
more shameless ASUS promoting from Hired, now...lol
:asus: -
For other people who read this should remember that if the fans were tampered with or configured to turn on at a later time, the internal components will be getting very hot and the heat may do some permanent damage. Even if it was just your first try testing it out. So be warned. -
-
Thanks alot JackBauer. Will buy the M6Va tomorrow
-
The marketing team here is better then the one ASUS hired LOL
Congrats Lightning
I like to personalize my fans, only turn it up if needed, and if it goes over 55 degrees -

I believe the point i am trying to mainatain is that the audible noise from the z70 is very low under normal usage. Gaming or hi end usage ofcouse produces more noise. Can someone please point a notebook to me that has 2 fans with the same specs that is less loud. Ok i understand people complaining. Find something to compare to. There is nothing there. From now on i would like to impose a rule. If you complain....compared to what......
-
Well, the people who complained may have owned a laptop for the first time, or switched from a smaller/larger one with a weaker GPU or something similiar.
It's not unexpected something as slim as the z70va with a x700 will generate heat thus the fans wil be turned on -
Who didn't say that I work for Asus
But how many fans do the Z70Va really got? 3?
And what is the capasity of the battery?
And has anyone of you actually checked the weight of the laptop? Is it 2,6 or 2,7? I wonder since the specs say a bit different -
I has 2 or 3. I know there is at least 2, one for the GPU and other for CPU located at the top left and right respectively.
I see 3 vents for the GPU, and 2 for the CPU, as well as another in the middle at the bottom.
It is a 8 cell battery, if I remember correctly.
As for the weight....errr....it should be 2.7, its a tad over 6 pounds if I recall correctly.. -
God Lord! That many vents.
Marylin Monroe would really have liked that laptop!
Do you know the capasity in mWh? -
Here:
-
Wohaa...Me Likey!
That sounded good.
Thanks alot, now it's only 12 hours left before I order M6Va :asus: -
LOL
Congratulations again heheh -
My battery only has 60813 mWh full capacity
-
Have ordered the computer now....will have it within five days
Got a very good deal with the store...got it for less than their normal price
-
hmmm... my battery charge capacity is between the mods!
I get 64000 total mWh on my Z71v.
Z70Va got noisy fans?
