    Hello All,

I purchased an Asus Z70va in October 2005, and I have been pleased with it to date. However, about two weeks ago, one of the fans started making a lot of noise ... so much noise that I now am afraid to turn it on in a public place.

I am pretty good with a screwdriver, so if I can figure out how to get to the fan, I can probabloy do something lile blow compressed air on it or oil it.

This fan is what Speedfan reports as the #2 fan .. the noise sounds like it is coming from whatever fan is closest to the F1 key.

Can anyone tell me how to access this fan? I would have thought that Asus supplies a details assembly manual to consumers.

Any suggestions for lowering the noise level of this fan? I am afraid to use Speedfan to totally disable the fan.

Thanks very much for any answers.

    -marc

As an aside, I am dynamically undervolting the CPU, and the CPU runs at a temp of around 60C, so it's not a heat issue per se.

Link to a site with the link to the Z70Va disassembly manual, the 'Tech Guide' for Z70Va.

You have to completely take apart the notebook and remove the motherboard to get to the GPU HSF. What's the temperature for the GPU in Speedfan (Remote 2)?

Have you tried setting the fan manually to a lower speed? There's a guide for using setting up Speedfan on the forums, do a search for it.

    Thanks for the info.

Remote2 is abotu 82C. However, as I said, I don't think that the temp matters that much. If I hit the Fan2 vent a little, the noise will subside for a minute, then start back up.

I have set the fan manually to a lower speed, but I am not sure what the lowest permissible speed is. I don't want anythingto overheat due to my monkeying with the fan.

    Thanks.

What model helicopter? Sorry, couldn't resist.

It sounds like something that could be covered by Asus' warranty easily. Have you considered calling them? Their response time is reported to be very good.

it does suck to have a new machine and have to send it back right away however.

I called the reseller last week, and they promised to get back to me with directions on how to access the fan, but so far, no joy. I am not too impressed with this company's support. The laptop is covered under a 2-year warranty, but I would hate to go without the laptop for a week or two, since I use it for my consulting work.

Well in addition to just instructions to the fan, they should just offer to swap it out for you. In the Asus support satisfaction thread, someone mentioned (for their issue) Asus sending them a fedex box, mailing it out and then receiving back it in 2-3 days.

I'm not familiar with Asus support, but who do you who do you need to call to get service like what's mentioned above?

hes not talking about asus support though. the Z70va is a Built to order. so his reseller is handling the support not asus. asus would if you wanted to but only for the barebone.

I see so the official Asus support would only be offered with ensemble units then? If so, that's a very good reason to go with one of those instead --for me at least.

if you were to buy a barebone with nothing and built it yourself. asus would handle their parts. but yes the built to order are handled by your reseller. Asus support is good. But the service you would get from geared2play or proportable would blow away any service asus could possibly give you period. They will handle calls all hours basically they are fast to email back. and will have like a 48 hour turn around time depending on the problem if you ship your pc to them. So as long as you go with a good reseller that support is much better than anything asus could possibly offer you.

So for pre-built ensembles like the v6va, would that be reseller supported or would that go through Asus?

It would go through ASUS, but depending on the place you get it from, sometimes the dealer also assists you with dealing with ASUS

I dont mean to sound like a broken record but. There are no fan issues on the z70va. If you think the fan is loud there are 2 possible reasons
    1. You are very sensetive
    2. the fan is broken
Based on previous experience i would say number 1 is very likely however since you said it only started bugging you about a week ago then very possibly #2 is a reality. Again contact your reseller and take charge. So far i have not had any z70va returned with bad fans but i have seen atleast a couple returned for trivial reasons that were not covered under warranty. So called loud fans are within normal range in terms of decibels. I for one will not change a fan unless it has characteristics of ball bearings that are gone or going. As far as your reseller telling you how to access the gpu fan. Its not a surprise that they didnt get back to you. That is becuase you cannot access the gpu fan. If you did you would void any warranty and very likely would not be able to put the lappy back together. Not the hardest thing to dismantle completely but i would not allow it.

There might be something spun around your fan like lots of hair that is making it sound like that or there is something in there.

Also maybe your fan has just decided to break on you and is missing one propeller. Happened on my old Zalman VGA cooler, that ginormous one that covered both sides of your videocard with huge heatsinks and a heatpipe. I had their optional 80mm fan on it as well and that thing was so delicate, one of the propellers off the fan broke off when I accidentally brushed it while it was on. That's when it sounded like a freakin' helicopter.

    Could be that.

Take it apart and check unless that voids your warranty.

    Cheers,
    Mike

That is correct... only if you say pretty please that is... :p Just Kidding. I'm sure any reseller here would help their customer when it comes to contacting Asus. For us, we can get an RMA in a couple minutes where as, if going directly they may question your issue as being an issue or not.
