Hey I've been looking at buying a Z70va for the last few weeks and just recently joined here. My question is regarding the OD on the z70va.

On Itsnc.com under the configuration it says "**NOTE** 3rd Party Drives do NOT fit"

But here in the Asus FAQ it states

"The Optical drive is tricky, since it needs a Bezel to merge itself within the OD tray, as if a 3rd party OD is inside, the 'plate' is abnormal looking."

    Cheers
    Brian

Right, well you can't get the bezel or rails that you need without buying one of the Asus drives because they aren't sold as seperate parts......

are you saying that other od's wont fit due to the the shape of the case which is smaller at the bottom than the top

No, notebook optical drives conform to a "standard". However, there are then attachment pieces that need to be made to fit every different make and model of laptop..... so with that, yes you can physically use any drive, but you need the extra pieces that are needed for that laptop....... the rails are no problem... the faceplates can be though. There are different attachment points that optical drive makers use..... panasonic is not the same as toshiba and neither are the same as pioneer..... so you make have to superglue the faceplate on or do something to make it work..

I would rank a mod like this at about 3-7 out of 10..... Could be very easy, but could be rather difficult. Either way, you're going to spend a lot more to do it this way and get the exact drive you want and maybe not have the perfect result...... but that should be expected, you've got to judge if it's right for you or not.

Ahh thanks for shedding some light on that. From the way you have described it sounds like it is very doable (atleast for myself). And that the biggest problem would be getting the cover plate to hold in place. Sounds like I need to buy a Z70 so I can investigate this a little further :D

.... right, you need to buy at least a z70 combo drive to use it's parts........ that's why it'll get to be more expensive.
