I was excited because I got my 2nd stick of ram to put in my 2 week old Z71V.

Ram works fine, put it in the slot under the keyboard. Unfortunately there seems to be a problem with one of the three latches at the top of the keyboard.

The one on the far right seems to be broken, because now there is a hole where that black latch should be. Because it isn't there, the keyboard rattles on that side when I type.

Is there any fix for this? I don't want my keyboard to rattle, I love how before the Z71V had such a silent keyboard.

Hmm... I'm not really sure what you can do about it.

If I were you, I'd try to bring it back to the reseller from where you bought it from and see if they can do anything about it...

This is weird, but it sounds like the broke... either it's not there at all, or it's stuck back in the hole (perhaps the spring broke)....... but if either are the case, you've got to replace the entire palmrest.... that includes the touchpad and all...... you're looking at about $45-50 just for the part...... and since that's the most time intensive part to replace..... probably another $50-75 to have someone else replace it for you.

I'd get some double stick tape.

    thanks for the quick responses.

As for the latch, it was there originally yes, holding the keyboard down when it was new. It was a few days ago, when I tried to remove the keyboard to install RAM, that the latch/hook disappeared on the right side.

I might try double stick tape. Although there is a gap between the keyboard and the flooring under it, may need to add some sort of spacer. Also, I'm worried the tape might melt, as the spot is directly over the CPU.

Can you take a quick picture of the system with the keyboard out.... so I know we're on the same page?

I'm a little afraid to remove the keyboard again, the screws that hold it down on the bottom are starting to get stripped pretty badly. I did manage to just pull off some keys to get a better view.

The first pic is of the problem area on the right side (near delete key, which I removed to see better). The second pic is of the middle latch for reference only (near the F8 key, removed to see better).

interesting as i researched this, i have the same problem. I was wondering if its safe to put duoble stick scotch tape over where the cpu is and it wont melt or damage anything.

    Jlo mein,
I have read on these forums the keys on some notebook keyboards are difficult to put back on once removed. I hope you did not cause more problems for yourself by trying to get good pics.
Just an item to ponder and for feedback,

I'm planning to open this Z71V up to get to the ram. How likely is it that the latches will break?

not sure, but they are very fragile and dont take much to strip down. I dont know why asus wouldnt just use screws, at least they can be replaced easily. If they use clips, well then at least make it metal.

They dont normally pop out like that. I ve seen this happens about a dozen times but never in house. On the z70va this is easy to fix becuase the panel above the keyboard is modular. On the z71v you have to remove the entire top cover. I am not sure if asus will cover this it all depends. But dealer cost for physical damage which is what this is would be about 100$ including round trip shipping.

They usually do use screws. 2 of them on the bottom plus clips. The clips work very well. They really dont break unless you constantly pick at them.

I am sorry you bought this from us? I doubt it as we leave no marks on the clips not ones you can see clearly anyways and you would not be posting here if you had purchased it from us about your issue. If you called in and said it arrived that way then you would be covered. If you call in a couple weeks later and said the clips broke i am sorry i am not going to take your word for them arriving that way. You will atleast have to pay shipping we wont cover ground on that.

nO I didnt buy from you guys, as im up in canada. I knew it, I should have just bought from somewhere local like a Future shop, but they dont have asus. I will deal through ASUS directly myself. Maybe not on this issue, cause i dont think these clips warrant the trouble, downtime and money to fix.
