The question is simple: Can i use any slim DVDRW or do I need to buy the one offered in the barebones?

Here's the simple answer for you..... yes and no.
Alright, I should have your attention now.
All notebook optical drives are basically universal. However a lot of these drives has a special connector on them which would be swapped from say a standard combo drive from that notebook to the new drive........ but there is no other way to get that part.
The only problem is the face plate. Every optical drive maker has a different connection pattern on the faceplates... so if you get another brand than what Asus offers, you're going to be making a custom set up..... It can be done, but if you get frustrated easily, it's not the best thing to try.... but you'll get the exact drive you want to use.
Thanks,
Justin

No and no.... right now Toshiba/Samsung is who they're using for these drives... different drives will probably be avaialble once they get bumped up to say 16x... but there is no telling when that will be.
For right now, the Z71v has only been made with a combo or 8x dl toshiba drive... so that's all that is avaialble.
No sATA anything yet.
Thanks,
Justin
