Is anyone else thinking what I'm thinking: pop the nVidia 6600 from the Z71V (which we all know is modular/removeable) into the Z70V ('modular' status unknown)?
Basically, it comes down to this:
1. Does ASUS sell the 6600 card on its own?
2. If so, for how much?
3. Is the X600 on the Z70V also modular?
Heck, I'd pay extra to get 128MB 6600 in the Z70V. (If they put a color shine screen on there, then it would be my perfect notebook.)
-
Nope,
gpu are not modular in any current laptops.

I must read about a dozen posts a week regarding swapping or upgrading GPUs. Can we make a sticky that says "LAPTOP GPUs ARE CURRENTLY NOT UPGRADEABLE!"
-
I'm sorry to have ruffled a few feathers here. I'm sure that the two previous posters meant that ASUS notebooks are not upgradeable, since we all must know by now that Dell gpus have been upgradeable in their 9XXX series for quite some time, as well as certain Clevo/Sager/Eurocom models with PCI-E and of course the Acer 17xx (if you can call that a notebook).
It's also been well established and confirmed as fact in this very forum that the gpu in the Z71V is most certainly and absolutely removeable. The only questions, as raised by Justin, are: a) what would you replace it with since there is currently only one card for the Z71V, and b) it's not necessarily that easy to do (unlike changing the RAM, memory or hard drive).
I'm just wondering if ASUS actually built a completely different motherboard for the Z70V or if it's the same motherboard in different packaging? If it's the latter, then it should be theoretically possible to swap them, shouldn't it?
I'm also curious as to why ASUS would change the model name from the M series to the Z series. Perhaps they are very similar in some way, just like the Z71A/V. Then again, it might just be a marketing move. But really, I didn't think that it was an outrageous question to ask. Just searching for the ideal notebook (as always).

The Z70v's (M6v) motherboard and the Z71v's (M7v) motherboard are different in a lot of ways..... number one the chassis' are different sizes, so nothing is in the same place.
To the rest of the question then...... it's impossible.

Justin

Only one way to tell....muahhahahah
I take it upon my self. Reading an article that says nvidia and x800 are now requiring manufacturers to confirm to the unified pcie architecture in the "future" i think its worth a try. Someone please pass the scalpel. [}]

Well the 6800 and x800 cards are on the same platform...... but they're big.
That's why the lesser graphics cards are mainly being used in the small systems and they aren't unified..... but as I understand the top end cards are. We're just not going to see them in a small laptop any time soon.

Justin

In a sence the 6800 and x800 are unified but they really are not. The are only implemented by clevo as of now. When all manufacturers are forced to create a common form factor for their pcie cards then this becomes a true unified architecture. You sure the z70v has a different card then the z71v? DOnt make sence why they would do that. its in asus best interest to make them identical in size. Cant wait to tear it open

Yeah, right now Asus' cards are basically per model...... I've done some crazy stuff before (and you know it), but if you can get the 128mb 6600 go in the Z70v... you're good in my book.
Remember, the Z70v is a refresh, so it wasn't designed with pci express in mind exactly... It's not a bad computer by any means ......... infact, it's build better (with a carbon fiber chassis) and has a slightly nicer screen, and the option a lot of people love... the port bar... but it has a lot to do with the layout of the board and the room there is to play with.
Thanks,
Justin

Well people are only touchy about this topic because it is re-hashed soooo sooo often that it gets to be a bit of a pain...to somepeople.
But in general, upgrading the gpu in notebooks is not an easy task...like it is in desktops. First ati/nvidia do not sell gpus that you can use to upgrade, thus getting hold of a better gpu's is very difficult, then you have the issues of actually trying to instal it.
For someone like justin this maybe possible...he as access and knowledge far above most general users, but it will void your warranty and could render you laptop useless.
Yes dell does offer the ability to upgrade the gpu, but this is still not a simple task and is a dell only feature, that is you cant buy a card from them and switch it into an asus or vice versa.
So in conclusion, in general the gpus in 99.9% of current notebooks are not end-user upgradeable... and those 1% that in "theory" could be, 99% of end-users dont have access or enough skill to sucessfully upgrade the gpu....and I mean no disrespect to users in saying this.
thus if you fit that 1% of 0.1% all the power to you

The only reason dell has upgradeable card is becuase clevo released a unified laptop for them and the rest who resell it. It literally takes 3 minutes to remove the old card and drop in the new one. You can use either the x800 or 6800 in it. Now the z70v is a pcie based laptop just like the z71v. I have not had a chance to gut it but i have a feeling its the same port as the z71v then ofcourse i may be wrong. We will all find out this comming week. Unless i am missing something and someone already conducted this test. Someone may linch me for this but dealers will be able to get the 6600 in a few months. Dealers know how. Will we need it is a different questions. Also how much will it cost is unknown for now.

i have heard rumors that there is a possibility of a x600 with 128mb of ram rather than 64, can anyone clarify this?
-
PROPortable Company Representative
down the road, yes..... but not now. I know that by fall this will be possible, or so says Asus. Other than that, the units that have come in now are only 64 and if they bring in another model with more video ram, it'll just be in addition to what's out there now. Asus planned for late summer (which is september), but the Z70v was also supposed to come out in the begining of July.... and we have it now.
Things in the mobile computer world change everyday.... sometimes before any of us can even keep up..... in fact, I've seen many times when Asus is surprised to get something when they did because they didn't expect it.... that just goes to show you that placing bets on what's going to be out when isn't the best move you can make.
Thanks,
Justin

Even if it was tru and it did come out would not make a bit of difference. The analogy with the 9700 64 vs 128. Same benchmark, same frame rate, same game play. Memory is just not the determining factor for better frame rate.

Just got it in right now. Windows is loading and should be done with review by end of day if i have time otherwise it will go up on the forums tomorow. DOnt expect much from the video card. Its just a tad bit better then the 9700. So far it seems they have completely redisigned the component formfactor other then that the chassy is identical. A nice feature they kept is the port bar expansion port. Also has the optical type spdif like the z71v. I ll have all the details later on.

I don't know if any of them are on this forum, but a few of our customers should be getting theirs today.... maybe they'll post something.
From me standpoint, all the good things about the M6 are there (carbon fiber, port bar option, just design), plus the added bonus of the sonoma platform with the higher res widescreen. It's pretty straight forward that it's a better machine than the Z71v, regardless if that has 128mb card.
The Z70v uses hyper memory, so you have a 64mb card but then up to another 192mb of shared memory between your card and your system ram.... for what totals out to 256mb..... Your 3d mark scores aren't going to be much better if at all, but hyper memory as talked about in another thread is helpful for a lot of applications.

Justin

I was not able to allocate more then the base 64mb hyper ram there is not even an option. On a brighter side apprantly 0204 bios exists for this unit even though asus only has 0202 for it. Albert has it. Not sure what it fixes but it did fix the hyper ram becuase it was not present with the original bios.
