I don't know if I'm crazy or what, but as far as I can tell the screen on my new Z71V is 1280x800. I know this is the resolution of the Z71A, but I know I ordered the Z71V, and the model # on the bottom of my laptop is Z7100V. Any ideas on how I can figure out what's up? I've already tried increasing the resolution by unchecking the "hide modes this monitor can't display" in the Advanced Display Properties; all that happens is that the desktop expands beyond the edges of the screen. Is there anything else I can check to see if I've got a Z71A?

Wow that's odd. Does the text on your screen appear fuzzy? If so, then it could be just your screen not running at native resolution. Otherwise, you'd definately deserve a Z71v replacement from your dealer.

Whoa, that's not a good sign. Maybe they sent you one with a lower res' screen hoping you wouldn't find out.

    Uh oh.

I'd say reinstall the display drivers from scratch and then give it a try.

Let us know how that goes.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Edit:: The Z71A didn't come with the 6600go right? So if you have that videocard then I'm sure you have a Z71V

Make sure the video drivers are installed correctly like shampoo said. Thats really strange. The only time ive seen that issue or not having the correct rez has always been related to drivers.

I just completely uninstalled the old drivers, then downloaded and installed the most recent drivers on Asus's site. Still exactly the same. The text looks like it's at native resolution. For instance, looking closely at the "l", it seems only a single pixel wide. I'm definitely no newb when it comes to hardware, I just have trouble believing that this laptop has the wrong panel in it.

To answer Shampoo's edit, yeah this is a 6600 Go. The Z71A is listed as having the 915GM chipset, which I believe denotes integrated graphics.

SRD, my sig was missing from my sig many times, it'll come back :D

supagold...the 915GM chipset and all that, don't worry about it as it lists all of the different 915's I believe. I think my Z70Va says the same thing, but you DO have the 6600go so it IS a Z71V. Like SRD said I think someone was drinking some cheap booze while assembling your system together OR your reseller thought you were a dumb consumer and knew about this and just sold it to you since they had it laying around.

This is worst case scenario, I bet it was just an honest mistake, let them know and let them know how angry you are and that you should be compensated PLUS given something in return.

I say ALWAYS request something for your troubles, especially when it's something this big. If they say we can't do that blah blah our policy is this and that, say shut the @#%#$@^$# up and gimme my product as it should be AND gimme something in return or ELSE.

    :D

    Cheers,
    Mike

About the 915GM, I just wasn't clear - my device manager doesn't show that; what I meant to say is that the Z71A spec sheet listed that. Yeah, looks like I'll be pulling my parts back out of this thing and sending it back. I will definitely be looking for some compensation, because this is a tremendous PITA. I'll post an update to this thread when I get an explanation from the vendor.

    Ok
Please confirm that the lappie you have is a z71v. You can do this by looking on the back of the lappie or looking for the 6600go video card in device manager. Is your memory size 128mb or 64mb. It doesnt matter really becuase the 64mb version comes with an identical screen. So if you have a z71v and you installed the base driver of the cd and you ruled out software issue there is only one reason why you have a wxga screen. The notebook you have has an aftermarket screen. This can happen for a few reasons
    1. You got a refurb from asus. Asus does sell refurbs to vendors but they are always advertised as such.
    2. You got a used / repaired laptop
    3. you are overseas. I dont know overseas specs but all na z71v come with the same screen
Your next course of action is to contact your dealer

If you bought an Asus Z71v, it will only look nice at the default resolution. That is the 1600x(something) can't remember the exact number right now, sorry.

Download anyone of the latest or close to lastest nvidia driver from

    www.laptopvideo2go.com or www.guru3d.com

Make sure you installed the nvidia driver correctly. There are steps to download and installing in the link below above my sig.
