Can't figure it out, once in standby it won't resume, I have to hold down the power button until it shuts off and then boot it up again. Anyone else had a problem like this, or have any ideas?

Any chance of doing a BIOS update? That might help...

Hummm. Honestly sounds like something I'd suggest reformatting for.... XP Pro w/ sp2 shouldn't give you a problem at all.

    Thanks,

Try unplugging all usb devices, for some reason exact same problem happened to me with my m6n after the new bios update came out and it didnt like it when i had anything plugged into the usb ports. Try also resetting bios settings to default. To access bios hit f2 while the machine is booting. Although in my case i wasnt able to access the bios until i had unplugged all usb devices. Hope that helps...

On another note do you know the exact part where it freezes? Before windows beings to load or after? That would also help.

Know what other software and so forth that has been installed is also important........ I've seen a lot of software cause problems like this when installed.

The bottom line is, you have to set up a control environment to narrow down what's causing it. You have to rule out all software and external devices to even start thinking about hard ware issues.

    Thanks,
    Justin

The issue showed up before I had installed ANYTHING but windows and the drivers from the CD. It persisted after patching to SP2/all other updates, during which time the only other thing running/installed was my firewall(Kerio). I don't know when in the resume process it freezes, I just get a black screen, seems like its not even starting to resume. I also had it lock up and sit there forever with a blue windows desktop when I went to shutdown today. This is making me kinda nervous...

I'll give that USB device trick a shot, I am using a USB mouse and a flash drive... Be a week or so before I'll have the time to format it or play with flashing to a new Bios - hadn't found how to get into the BIOS before, so I don't yet know what one it has....

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

Hmm. Curiouser and curiouser... I reformated and did a clean install with a different WinXP CD, this one with SP2 included. The old one was hanging at a specific point in installation, scratched maybe; this one solved that problem at least. Installed drivers, tested the standby function. The power LED was actually blinking this time, and YES, it resumed! Installed Kerio and HL2, came back after dinner, found it locked up. Hmm. Reboot, test the standby function. No joy, power LED stays solid like before, and it wont respond. WTF. Uninstalled HL2 and Kerio, no change, still won't standby/resume properly. This makes no sense!

Must be bios issue then? Try updating to latest bios version. Also if you're already using the latest version reset bios to default configuration, there should be an option somewhere in there.

That really sounds bad... what else is running in the background when you choose to standby?

Nothing else installed at all but WinXP and the drivers off the CD. Lotsa **** running, driver utilities and windows background stuff, but nothing else. I did try going through and killing every non-essential process, which made no difference.

I can't find a drivers page for the Z71V on Asus's site...? Or a bios page, for that matter... I swear there was one a couple days ago, but I can't find it now. I have tried resetting the bios to default, as well as looking through all the options for anything useful, came up blank for useful options and the reset to defaults did nothing noticable.

Right at the moment, standby/resume is working again, I uninstalled the "ATK ACPI Utility" and it started working. Then I reinstalled Kerio and it died. Then I uninstalled Kerio and it stayed dead. Then I reinstalled the ATK ACPI Utility and it works again. I am so very baffled, that sequence of events makes absolutely no sense to me... Now I'm afraid to install anything else for fear of it dying again...

The Z71 section is currently down... it's there, but ASUS's servers really suck. They go down a lot...
I'm sure there's a solution to your problem. Don't sweat it... the solution will come.

EDIT: here's a link to their download page

Laptop was idling, pretty sure it went into standby(due to me not changing the power settings, this was set to come on after 20mins, and I was away longer than that). Left it on because I'd been using net on it while gaming on my dually, but had closed IE before leaving, just didn't shut down as I was in a hurry... I believe Steam was updating CSS, and Kerio was on, but both were uninstalled without any immediate affect.

Checked out the bios page, looks like I have the most recent one already. Reset to defaults again on principle.

I do have 2 sticks of RAM, I'll give that a shot in the morning if I can scrounge time. Anyone know of some program like Memtest that doesn't need a cursed floppy drive?

I also have a laptop which has 2 piece of memory, one is 512, the other one is 512, making it 1gb, with 1gb, it will standby once, then it will just stuck when you close the lid (solid lit on power), after I remove it, making it only 512, it will so everything normally, standby all works fine. So I suspect the ram has to do a lot to it.

    Damn...

I came across a topic on this a few weeks ago. I can't remember where. It was basically relating to WinXP and certain drivers causing the problem.

I guess google will answer it for you.

    question to the original poster...

i have a w3v.. and i always have it set for standby when closing the lcd lid.

the blue led on the w3v always pulsates when in standby.

sometimes say once a month, it overnight ends up being a SOLID led.

but u flip the lid and you don't see anything on the display...

I would have to reboot my laptop and then lose my work.

3 days ago this happened, I learned that with all keys seemingly unresponsive....

the FN + LCD key will bring the display back.

    Is this your problem?
