Hey guys just wanted to hear some good arguments for what you would get.. the z80k or the z70va (coming very soon) -- any thoughts are appreciated.
ie video card / cpu comparisons / build quality / heat / screen quality / long term value

    power = good

    Thanks :asus:

Well, I got fed up with the whole z70va debacle and bought a samsung x50. I still think the ASUS notebooks are nice, but the x50 is no slouch.

video card: the z70va wins this hands down. the 9700 although a good card is kinda dated now.

cpu: although the z80k might be more powerful and is 64 bit it wont have the battery life that the z70va will.

build quality: dunno much about the z80k, but the z70v has had great reviews on its build and looks.

heat: i would think teh z80k will have more heat do to its processor but i'm not sure.

screen quality: should be about the same, the z70va is 15.4" while the z80k is 15" but they are both sxga.

value: i'd have to say that the z70va given the price on istnc is probably the best value out there hands down.

Go with the Z70va... it's technology is newer and the build quality is higher. It's also lighter.

    It's a win win situation

If you buy in the UK it's about 2600 but I managed to get a brand new one via ebay for an even 2000. I've had it for a few days now and it's great. 5.3 lbs thin (lighter than the 15 inch powerbook), 2Ghz, 1 GB upgraded to 2 GB. The two things I was holding on for in the z70 were x700 video and bluetooth. I had to settle for the x600, but I got my bluetooth and a wsxga+ matte screen, very nice. I also gave up dual-layer DVD burning, but I'll live. Just got a new contract programming job that involves travel every week so the portablity with the screen size sold me. So can you tell how much I like this notebook yet?

Just as a follow-up yes I am in the US (Maine), and if the z70va timeframe was known I probably would have held out for it, can you say x700?

yeh, i want an x700, but damn that samsung x50 is SWEET looking, and i'm guessing the screen is top notch. i thought that the x50 was supposed to come with the x700 at some point? maybe it was wrong advertising by samsung?

in any case, that's one laptop i'd love to see.

I think the x600 vs x700 is the old specific country package deal. If you look at the x50 specs in Australia vs UK you will some differences. And yes it is sweet, if you pm me I can see if the seller has any more left, I can't guess her price though. Now I'm shopping for the perfect widescreen laptop bag. I've seen a couple at sfbags.com that looked good.

If you are really keen on the idea of an AMD processor, look at some of the new turion models. Notably, the Acer Ferrari... it isn't an Asus, but people seem to have a lot of good things to say about it. Of course, how it stacks up against the refresh will probably be a running debate.

i talked to a US retailer... dynamism or something like that. the guy said that altho the x700 is in promo material, he has yet to see an x50 with the x700.

i'm holding out for the w2v.. we'll see if i can wait that long.
