Is the HDD in Z96J (specifically at powernotebooks.com) and other asus notebooks shock mounted (i guess that means mounted on rubber rails )?
How does the HDD protection againts shocks compare to that in thinkpads ?

Very few laptop hard drives are "shock" mounted because they are shock built. Laptop hard drives are built quite differently than desktop hard drives and can take being moved, tilted and even turned upside down while spinning.
The only thing that the shock mounting might give you some marginal protection against is if you drop it or hit something with your laptop while the hard drive is spinning. Now, some people may be inclined to do that, but I would hope they are in a tiny miniority. Unless you are one of these people, the shock mounting should be taken for what it is..."marketing hype".
Did you hear about the guy who went into the Dr.'s office and started bending his arm and complained...hey Doctor...it hurts when I do this...to which the Doctor replied..."then don't do that" -

Now a drop of a laptop may very well kill me first, but the more protection the better, right ? Wish I could afford the toughbook.
My 5 year old sony vaio is still going strong, running almost 24/7/365. Of corse it has also almost never been moved while running -

Getting a ruggidized or semi-ruggidized laptop may save you from your (unfounded) worry, but you really sacrifice technology, and...what's worse...you will pay enough extra for it that you could have bought a dozen hard drives and put them on the shelf just in case you needed them... -

I've seen a dell laptop that was running and was dropped from a table, 2.5 feet to the ground on to carpet in the library. It survived and worked perfectly.
I also used the school laptop (dell) and too it around the library while it was running and constantly changing it from AC to battery and vice versa and moving it around a lot.
So it looks like any laptop can handle those basic uses?
Thanks for the info about shocks,

Any of the top ODMs brands will take a drop of 2.5 feet onto carpet and keep on ticking. It would only be some quirky landing that would cause it to be otherwise.
Heck, I had a friend working on an antennae on the roof and drop his laptop...yes...to the ground! It still works today. -
