    Hi all,

I managed to fit it almost all in the title so hopefully this post will be easier to spot :).

Does anyone else have this issue? It's moderately annoying/distracting, its sort of the backlight flickering a bit while it powers up. I suppose it is kind of similar to a CRT when its turned back on. I'm wondering if this is normal though, my old laptop didn't do this and I don't recall this happening before I took my Z96JS into the shop, but I could be wrong. To know if this is expected or if it's just me would be great to know.

    Thanks,
    Cat

    So it's just me?

Feel free to reply saying you don't see the issue. I'm just wondering - I noticed it as well when there was a S96J screen attached to my Z96J.

I am sure you are not alone but needless to say its not indicative of anything. I ve seen it before on unrelated models. Use it and be happy its not going to blink to death. As long as its not doing it during normal use. :)

    Hey,

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I should have made my title different - it does it for 10-30 seconds sometimes depending on the background. If its white or near white you can see it for a long time like a florscent light sort of flashing at spots as it runs down, then it seems to stabilize - it's a sort of wavering. It's quite distracting. I don't think it happens at 100% brightness but anything less and I can see it and it really bugs me. I'm not sure if its a LCD issue or not - I know there was someone in my area who had this issue with a Z96J and it may be possible at the shop they switched my motherboard with his (I know the mobo was switched because the MAC address changed, but the SN on the cover is the same). Does anyone else experience this issue with the Z96J or is it just me?

    Thanks,
    Cat

Could anyone with a Z96J do a quick test to see if this happens to your system?

All you need to do is set the monitor to turn off after 1 minute idle, with brightness of 90%. Then leave it for about 5 minutes and come back and look at the screen, especially on this forum page for instance, and see if you can see ripples.

If someone could do this it would be greatly appreciated and take 2 tonnes of my mind - thanks.

At 30-50% brightness it flickers continously, never stopping. The backlight is acting up. If its at 100% it works fine but at anything less its crap :(

    It's not just me.

I called up tech support after having done some research online - it seems to be a standard sort of issue with laptop LCDs that they start to flicker like a dying flouro light after a few years - but mine is only 2 weeks old.

The guy I got through to at tech support said he'd heard of the issue before but it wasn't common. He had Z96JS in front of him and lowered the brightness down to 50% as I suggested and he saw the problem as well. So both of us have this issue, as well as that guy from the store when I bought it. That makes 3 - he says it may be an issue with all Z96JSs and that people have not complained beacuse they never use anything but full brightness. I personally want to be able to use all the different levels, and I found this out when I was doing some coding at 1am and dimmed the screen to rest my eyes. I noticed it during normal use without looking for it.

It's good to know its not just me. The tech is looking into it.

    HI,
Have just got Z96JS. First of all I saw the grainess issue and flickering. After BIOS update grainess has gone, but the flickering is visible at any brightness level :(

: ( - Try disabling PowerPlay. I made about 3 different posts about this and this one was the most ignored of all of them (the other two had better titles/were more consise).

Powerplay though fixed it for me. I also tried cycling the monitor through restarts with various brightness levels. I'm not sure which one helped, but give both a try and post how it goes - hopefully it will fix it for you too :)

Thanks for advises CCz_Cataphract! I've tried both Your suggestions with no effect. But I fixed it when lowered brightness level by 8% with catalyst utility. It is really strange that it has fixed this issue. When brightness is lowered by 7% the flckering is still visible.

I woud like to know at what CPU temperature Your fan turns on? What is idle CPU temp when working with simple tasks such as web browsing? My fan turns on and off every minute. It starts at 54 and off at 51.

Darn, that is unfortunate. Glad to hear you got it to work though, for me it was only happening at settings lower than the first couple of max ones.

For me, it has been fine now after having done this a few weeks ago. I did it see it the first time after I disabled powerplay then did the 3 reboot cycles on off, then max, then 2 below max - I saw the flickering at first when I changed brightness settings the next time (on a white screen) but after 10 minutes of leaving it on at about 9 brightness settings from the max I've never seen it since.

What tool are you using to track the temperatures? NHC?

Yes, NHC. CPU temp never drops lower than 51

I just got a Z96J and it has the same problem under 13th level of brightness. Can you explain me what is Powerplay and how to disable it please?
    Thanks.

Darn, I forgot to do this while I was at home during the weekend, now I'm back at work with no NHC to test.

To disable powerplay, you have to have ATI Catalyst Control Center installed. Then right click on it and go to the Advanced Settings. Go to the PowerPlay tab, unclick 'PowerPlay Enabled' box and press OK and that should be it. Shut down and unplug the system and remove the battery, then reconnect everything boot it up and see if it helped : )

So far just disabling powerplay helped so I see ok over brightness 10. I'll try the other suggestions to see if it help with the lower brightness.
    Thank s a lot.
