Ok, playing CDs is no issue, but when putting in a DVD the system hangs very bad. It is running like it is a 133mhz with 8mb of RAM it is so slow. The CPU usage is low and cant find any processes bogging it.

At the exact moment when I take the DVD out the system goes back to normal.

The drive is a QSI SDW-086, I have not been able to find drivers for it.

    Anyone have this problem?

Try placing that DVD into another computer. The last time something like that happened to me it was because the DVD disc was damaged.

There was a lot of discussion about this sort of thing lately. See if you fit under some of the categories below.

    1. The computer lags when the DVD spins up. This happens, as far as I can tell, on every computer - it's just that on notebooks, where DVD drives are more power-efficient and therefore have longer spinups, it is much more visible. This is most likely a problem with the Windows DVD access code -- and there's nothing you can do against it. The lag disappears as soon as the DVD spins up, but it happens again after it is spinned down for power conservation (which is only after a few seconds of idleness, on the notebooks I've seen).

    2. Do you have modded ATI drivers and is your DVD a video-DVD? I've had someone with whom I tried fixing a "DVD-drive freezing my system problem" for half a day, when in fact he was always using video-DVDs to test the drive, and the problem was in fact that he was using modded ATI drivers, which were messing up with video overlay or something.

If so, revert to stock drivers. In any case, as I've posted on that thread:

Also, don't draw your conclusions only from one DVD; use several, from several batches and brands.

I was trying to get the data off the DVD not watch it. It was weird though, out of 6 PCs I tried it on (all different setups, 4 desktops, 2 notebooks) only my sister's HP would read it. All of the other systems would bog and act frozen until the disc was removed.

I copied all the data and burnt it on another disc and everything works fine.

    Weird...

Then it's the disc itself, sometimes the physical condition of the disc has been slightly mis-aligned... although it's strange that your sis' HP can read it just fine.... is the disc branded under HP? :D

... and sometimes the disc has just been scratched :)

In any case, DVDs and CDs nowadays are so much less reliable than the CDs in the good ol' days of writing at 1, 2, or 8x...
