I just got my Z96Js yesterday and I'm quite excited to get it all put together, unfortunately I have to wait till Monday to get my **** processor, anyways I haven't used Arctic Silver 5 before and I was wonder where all everyone has had success putting it.

Obviously I will put it (with a thin coat per AS website directions) on the processor BUT should I put it on the x1600 GPU too? Also if I were to put it onto the GPU should I remove the tinfoil that seems to be covering its spot on the heatsink?

Also there are the x1600's ram chips, should I think about putting AS5 on those?

    Thanks for the help!

Check the link in my sig for AS5 guide. I put AS5 on CPU, GPU, and GPU RAM. I think it was well worth it, I got great temperature drops on both. I also put some on the memory controller hub, although I don't know if that did anything. This tinfoil you talk about I think is the thermal pad for the GPU. I did remove the thermal pad on my Dell, but you need to make sure that if you remove it, that the GPU/AS5/heatsink interface will be in contact, otherwise you won't get proper heat flow. Hope that helps a bit. By the way, where did you order your laptop from, that is cool that you can put it all together! Enjoy your lappy, that should be a beast!

I got it from page computer, it was the cheapest at the time of ordering, there shipping is SLOW though! Yeah I have built plenty of desktops but this is my first laptop, I'm really liking the fact that I can customize more than I imagined for a laptop (down to a custom Atheros wireless card even).

Thanks for the advice though! Anyone else experimented with it on the Z96Js? Especially with the RAM or GPU?

I guess my real big question is should I put it on the x1600s ram chips and if I put it on the GPU should I remove the tinfoil already on the heatsink? Thanks!

I would put it on the RAM chips, just make sure it is a very thin layer. Could you please take a picture of your tin foil, I want to make sure it is a thermal pad before I tell you you could remove it. The other thing to do would be to contact page computer and see what they say. In fact, i would recommend that, but please post a pic too!

I think you can but you still have to leave the thermal pads on it so it makes contact with teh heatsink!!!

Here is a picture of the heat sink, there appears to be copper underneath the sticky "tin-foil" that i peeled up a little bit on the GPU part. The RAM modules contact the sticky white thick squares. I'm pretty sure that maybe I shouldn't mess with the RAM pads as the heatsink might not contact the RAM if they are removed? Hmm.... has anyone done this on the Z96Js?

Don't remove the RAM pads unless you've got better pads available with the right thickness. I don't see why you can't get rid of the tin foil. Make sure you clean both surfaces thoroughly before applying AS5.

Yea I would leave the RAM pads on, my lappy didn't have pads like that. They contacted the heat sink directly. Like I said, best bet would be to call page computer and ask.
