Any news leaked when the touch version of the u500 might come out in the states?
-
I would also recommend OCZ Vertex 4 256GB model. If you descide to go with Samsung choose the 840 pro...

Just ordered the 256GB UX51VZ (CN035H) for 1536€ incl. shipment in Germany using a 10% voucher of a shop. Normal price is 1699 everywhere in Germany. Looks like I can test soon by myself. I wanted to wait after finding out more about the idle fan speed, touch version, display quality and possible storage upgrade options but I had to take this opportunity. Lets see what I can test. Eventually I can also do a Spyder calibration test run but I am not sure if this is possible before my return period ends.
Edit:
Sorry guys. I just checked again and you can only register/order if you are german resident. -
Wooo! For that price it's a very good deal!
-
Damn Asus Italy, ANY word about when the UX51VZ will be released, just a rumors who claims that we won't see it 'till January 2013... seriously thinking to buy it from Cyberport.de with 25€ shipment in Italy: the keyboard layout is the same, just "Z" instead of "Y" but for over 1600 € i'd like to have it with italian keyboard!!!
C'mon Asus, tell us something please!!! -
We might buy it in germany and keep the german keyboard untill jenuary, and then buy the italian one
-
Let's start finding someone who'll take the German Version back then
-
And this price, I would like to have a touchscreen too!
-
Sounds good, this is just the news I wanted to hear
I am looking forward to hearing from your updates regarding the recovery. -
Dear DvP, do you have any news about the review from computerbase.de?
-
I really don't care anything about touchscreen, i need it for work and game (when i can -.- ), and both of them don't really need any touch input so it will be a waste of technology (and money) for me
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
just no, sandforce still has its issues, the firmware can do so much when the controller is a pos -
Hey, thats sounds nice! My plan was also to wait a little bit more but for that price i would do the same. Can you tell me the shop where you bought it ? Im a German! Thx in Advance
-
Hi,
They told us that their sample has the Adata SSDs but I do not know the size yet. They ar also interrested about storage upgrade options and mentioned that eventually a 2,5" SSD mit be possible with adapter. No idea if they will focus on this topic in the article. Stay tuned.
About fan noise:
Asus replied to my report in terms of idle-noise and told me that there is already a bios update....but I do not know if this is the stock bios already and if the UX51vz was shipped with it. Check owners thread for more info:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...vz-owners-lounge-post8939620.html#post8939620
I can only strongly recommend that everybody reports complaints about idle noise if the fans still run faster than necessary.

PM incoming!

Hope they will publish the review soon! Thank you for the update!

Mmh, nothing until now, or maybe i'm too nervous to see it...;-)

Your PM function is disabled! ;-)

Sorry, should work now! Thx again!
-
It does not. Send me a PM. We spam the thread right now.....

I think there is not problem if you write that site publicly in this thread.

OCZ Vertex 4 doesn't use a Sandforce controller. It uses Indilinx. Having said that, I had two OCZ Vertex 4 drives fail after only 6 weeks each in my Asus G73JW. I also had an OCZ Vertex 2 fail intermittently after a few months. I think it may be a problem with that laptop, but I have become nervous about OCZ anyway.
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
ahhh forgot about those indilinix controllers, you are right
still its not a good controller -
Im really sorry for the Spam. Im searching now for 30minutes on my profile to activate PM or send you a PM but i can not find anything!
Already activated that i can receive E-Mails from other Members..what can i do ?
could you just write the shop in here ? Sorry again.. -
PMs activate 24 hours after your 5th post

Strongly agree about SSD recomandations (most durable, 830 and M4, 840 need some time to evaluate). But the notebook in question according to noteboocheck has proprietary HDD/SSD cable and slot ODD, so it's not good for user upgrade.
Same as Zenbook 500, why copy Apple bad habits? -
Thx at Dvp anyway. i was able to find the offer by myself and it looks like i was the last one who could get it to this price (around 1550 €
I will be open for any further questions at the day of arrival!

Yes, the proprietary storage format, combined with limited storage space, was already a negative in the Retina MacBook Pro. The main attraction of the U500/UX51 for me was that it might offer the same power and portability as the RMBP but with more opportunity for expanding memory and storage after purchase. As it turns out, memory expansion is limited and storage cannot be expanded due to these proprietary SSD and connectors. These things, along with the very high price and the colour limitations of the panel, combine to make the U500 less attractive to me than it once was.
Honestly I don't see a good option out there for combining power, portability and price at the moment. The Sony S15 has a standard-format SATA drive, but apparently if you replace it with a third-party model Sony forces the laptop to drop to SATA2 speeds instead of SATA3, so they artificially cripple it against user upgrades. In addition that machine has less powerful graphics. And it has the same display limitations. And the RMBP with adequate storage (512MB) and RAM (16MB), warranty and tax would set me back almost $4000 here in Canada (and be obsolete in 6 months just like every other machine).
I'm even leaning towards the HP DV6-7214nr at the moment. I never thought HP would have the best of anything. But that model has by all accounts a good screen, similar CPU and graphics, there are two RAM slots so you could get it to 16GB, and the standard 750GB hybrid drive would be upgradeable with a regular 2.5" SSD. It weighs 0.9lb more than the U500 but it costs $1200 compared to $1999 or $2500. If HP did a touch version I definitely would - though the only thing I would use touch for is developing touch apps for other people to use! -
Just got the confirmation from the local dealer.
Asus Italy declared today that the UX51VZ will be available starting mid January 2013.
Sorry Asus, I will very likely look for alternatives.
Non ITA keyboard is not an option for me, as it would jeopardize all my typing. Not just Z and Y, also all accented letters and special symbols. Can't spend so much for a laptop and not get the correct kb. -
Worst news ever... hating Asus so much for this!!! I was ready to give them my money ffs -.-"
-
Same for me.
Unfortunately this news matches the rumor mentioned in another post. So it is very likely to be accurate. -
Selling it after Christmas is so stupid...Jeez, A 10 year-old child would have better marketing skills than Asus' people...
-
I hoped to the last to be wrong ... it's a shame
-
Unfortunately I came to the same conclusion some days back and thought as well "HP DV6-7214nr" would be the solution. BUT actually the main driver for buying a new laptop replacing my "old" HP ProBook 6550b was the WEIGHT and now with the "HP DV6-7214nr" I would almost end up with the same weight (2.5kg instead of 2.75kb). Actually I think I will have to wait for Samsung to bring out a light 15'' laptop with Full HD (which I think is the optimal size and resolution) ...
-
My UX51VZ got here today. Boy, it's going to take some time to get used to Windows 8.
Anyways, I notice that the screen sometimes auto-dims. Is this a Win8 thing? Any way to disable it? -
Samsung 900X4C
15.6", but still good enough. And Full HD as well as far as I remember
-
its not win8 its the switchable grphics. go under the intel graphic settings and u should find somewhere something like "power saving auto brightness" turn that off that did the trick on my envy.
as for getting used to win8 dw it will be fast. Im actually enjoying it with the new shortcuts and stuff with keyboard. its much more efficient i think to have the windows button going back to metro. easy to multitask and switch between stuff.... now if only i had a touchscreen
-
The Samsung 900X4C has a 1600x900 resolution, and a fairly crappy TN panel.

@ ALL
Did anybody apart from me contact Asus about the (too fast) fan speed in idle mode? -
How did you contacted them?
-
I've decided that I'm out on this one. I would have had to pay $2400 to get a reasonable amount of storage with the proprietary SSDs, that and soldered RAM, possiblity of throttling really make this none too appealing to me.
I've ordered an Alienware m14x R2 with everything I care to have (better specs than the U500) for about half the price. It may not be thin or IPS but I think it will work well for my purposes. I'll just toss in a decent mSATA SSD. -
That one has a 1600x900 screen, not Full HD.
-
The WiFi - BT module should be upgradable as well, however, your point is well taken, not much upgradeability
-
Ok, ok ... i will link it another time ;-) Hope everyone will contact them.
-
It has different aerial connectors (smaller) so any upgrades will be difficult to find.
-
Well, I think you can definitely change the keyboard layout in the OS you use, then you can buy your own stickers and replace the letters that get switched. I really don't understand why people care so much about keyboard layouts. I use 3-4 different keyboard layouts daily on a keyboard that doesn't have any stickers on them.
Source: Das Keyboard -
You know, 1700€ are way too much to accept stickers on the keyboard.....
Sent from HTC HD2 with Tapatalk -
Well in Iceland it used to be that all laptops came with keyboard stickers. But it just depends on your patience. Do you want the laptop 2 months sooner and apply stickers, or can you wait for 2 more months for one without stickers?
Or can you type like a sir without actually looking at your keyboard when you type... -
There could be similar laptops from other companies announced during CES in January. HP, Dell, Sony & Samsung currently don't have 15 inch Full HD Touchscreen models with dedicated graphics.
