Just got it. Love everything about it - keyboard seems great, I actually like the small distance the keys move. Touchpad also seems to be working great.

The wireless is a major problem. It is completely DEFECTIVE. I get anything from 4 - 1 bars while sitting within 5 feet of my router. I've even tried a different router (One G, one N). If I move more than 10 feet away the wireless slows to a crawl and disconnects every few minutes. I've tried downgrading the wireless driver - no change. I've upgraded to the latest driver off of the Asus website - no change. I've disabled power management so that the wifi card is running at full power - no change. When I scan for networks all I can ever see is the router that is within 10 feet. All of our other laptops have always picked up roughly 30 networks around the neighborhood from my house.

It feels almost as if the wifi antennas are totally disconnected from the card.
Are all of the UX31 laptops defective or do I have a bad one? I don't want to waste my time having this one replaced only to experience the same problem. This is really infuriating, over $1000 and this Christmas gift is useless.

    Thanks!

What verison of the wireless driver are you using? I am using an older version (9.2.1.432) which seems much better then latest one. Make sure to set the power option for the wireless adapter setting power saving mode to maximum performance instead of maximum power saving.

I am disappointed with the Atheros adapter as well. No 5Ghz and even on 2.4, it only connects at 72.2 Mb/sec. As suggested, I am using the older driver.

Yes, I tried that older driver and I have it set to max performance. I see no difference. Hopefully this one is a genuine dud and they aren't all this bad?

I actually have to say I love the short distance of the keyboard,

I just got one and returned it though..

The keyboard was good, and the Elan trackpad was not to shabby.

The wireless totally blows. no matter the driver if your not in a close proximity it blows goats,

I had to return it because of that.

Are they all like this? And if so - how could anyone not end up returning it!? The system clearly should have been recalled if this is the case. There's no way this thing can connect to any sort of public wifi. It only works in the same room as the router in my house. We have 5 laptops here and have had probably 20 come through the door in the past / having friends over - never had any such issue with any device ever!!

My UX31 wireless appears to be stable but file copy speed is slooow. I ended up sending it in for RMA. Asus replaced the card and it worked good for 1 day. It's now slow again.
