Hello s17 owners,
How are the speakers? Quality of the audio? And does the sound gets loud enough to "hide" the fan noises?
-
The sound is way better than at my Razer Pro or the Alienware X17 …
And to say it clear: I played two hours Age of Empires IV today, yesterday HUMANKIND, everything on max … CPU was 76 degree and GPU was 72 degree … and the machine was quiet …
So please: Use the machine for real work and gaming and not just with Benchmarks and things like that … -
The temps look great! Did you buy your S17 online? I was thinking of buying from either Xotipc or Hidevolution! -
Sorry, I purchased in Germany from notebook.de … they can sell everything … so I got it with 6 TB SDD (3x2 TB) and 48 GB RAM …
I use the „silent mode“ which is still so fast that I can play everything I want to play … Temps are still fine (never more than 82 degree) and the machine is very silent … my Razer 17 Pro with 2080 MaxQ is louder … and also the X17 was way louder and the speakers were worse … I had the X17 for one week … than I purchased the Asus.Darkhan likes this. -
By any chances, does anyone use a ROG Headset like Delta with its Zephyrus ?
I would like some help with it. -
I'm looking into getting this laptop but I heard about the coil whine and weird fan speeds from others too, how are you faring? -
Mine has coil whine, other don't.
The weird fan speed is only for silent mode where it kick in for 2s and off.
Get the laptop if you have the finance for it, its amazing, just be really careful of quality control when you receive yours, and be careful of any asus software updates (bios or armoury crate) -
-
I have none coil whine ... and I know one other owner ... he had coil whine but it was gone after BIOS Update and the Asus Software ... so, I would go for it.

I'm meeting the guy to see the computer this saturday. perhaps you guys could give me a checklist of specific things to test/look out for before I cough up the $$$?
-
Mine is in RMA sorry i can't take Video
It's pretty standard but pay attention to the screen bleed, if you are at asus when buying it, try to do the bios update with them as we had 3-4 owners with bricked units. The coil whine appear from IDLE to heavy load for few seconds. Also check the temperature while using the laptop, CPU should not be above 88c and GPU around 80c for the best unit we had here on the forum.
In short we had RMA for bios bricked, screen bleed, bad thermals.

Hey guys, after 2 months of waiting my S17 finally arrived and I started testing it. My first impression was extremely positive, never seen a more beautiful notebook. The design, the keyboard with the light effects, just perfect. And I have almost no screen bleed, almost perfect black, lucky me!
However, today I started testing the 3d-performance, and realized, that whenever I start a 3d-program, like 3dmark or furmark I get a very annoying coil whine, it almost sounds like a bee is trapped under the keyboard, so it must be the 3070...
Is there anything that can be done? I only updated the armory crate software but it didnt help...
This is a huge deal breaker for me, if this cant be resolved, I must return it, which would be very sad.
Does the 3060-version have coil whine too? I would even change my unit for the slower one if this fkn noise would dissapear.
pls help.
EDIT: Thats it, I send it back. Spent 6 hours today solving problems, if the next will have coil whine again, I am done with Asus. Disgusting...Last edited: Nov 20, 2021Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

You could try to undervolt or underclock the gpu but then you will be affecting performance one way or anotherSpartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
Yes, I saw that too. The only way to minimize it, was to cap the fps to 50, then it was hardly audible. But that is unacceptable.
EDIT: I did a mistake.Last edited: Nov 20, 2021Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
Hey mate, it's known that some S17 has coil whine, mine does it too with the 3080 but once again it's only from IDLE to load after in load it disappear.
You have two choice, send it to RMA and they will change the board and it takes more or less a months, or return it if you are in the 7 days! all the best -
@vincent: well, my coilwhine was permanent. I started Furmark with very low resolution, so that the fans dont kick in, so that I can hear it. And after like 10min it was still there.
I ordered a new S17, cause I really fell in love with it. But if the next has it too, I am done with Asus and wait for 12th gen notebooks.
Wish me luck. -

OK guys, ordered a new one. Coil whine is now a bit less. I think that the 3070 on my first unit was kinda broken, cause I was getting weird slowdowns in furmark: like 1800MHz, 1000MHz, 1800MHz / 100fps, 20fps, 100fps, 20fps... and so on... on reddit someone wrote, that its cause of silicon lottery and that the GPU cant handle the automatic overclocking in turbo mode.
Whatever...
I was testing now a few hours and I must say, I am very impressed now.
Insane cooling, in all benchmarks never above 80°C (Turbo mode)
Funfact: If u enable overcloking in BIOS u can undervolt below the -80mV, mine was stable @-95mV.
Additionaly u can lock a clockspeed, like 3,5GHz all cores, that wasnt possible before, u could only disable turbo with Throttlestop.
Some results:
Cinebench R20:
~5300 (with 8x 4,2GHz, 82W@-95mV)
~5850 (with 8x 4,6GhZ, 112W, yikes!)
Firestrike (standard): 24.123
Time Spy (standard): 10.925

This is so disgusting. I had so many notebooks since 2002. But this is the first time, where I am FORCED to update the BIOS and the update goes wrong and bricks it. I mean, how can this happen?? I was so furious yesterday... If this notebook wasnt so beautiful, silent and fast I would give it back and never buy Asus again. But the Zephyrus with 3070 is sold out in Germany, I got mine for a nice price, so I cant give it back and buy another one.
At least the woman @Asus support was friendly and told me, that this was unacceptable and apologized. Lets see how long it takes.Spartan@HIDevolution and Lakshya like this. -

Costco has the 4K/RTX 3080 model available for its suggested retail price of $3699. If you've been desperate to get your hands on one of these, it may be worth ponying up the $60 membership fee to be able to buy one.

OK guys, got my repaired S17 back.
Everything seems fine, got the same 3D Mark score like before (~24.000)
But have bad news too: ASUS installed the new BIOS 311 and now I cant undervolt as hard anymore like with the old 309 BIOS.
With the last one I was stable @-90mV in cinebench etc., now with -80mV I already crashed 3 times in windows in idle, so I am now stable @-70mV. Not that bad but still weird, how can this be? Did anyone notice this too with the S17?
Additionally, after restart I see for half a sec a window open and close ("cmd.exe") (ASUS made a factory reset and installed a fresh Windows version) Does anyone know how I cant find out what this is or how I can prevent it? It is kinda tilting, seeing this after every fresh start... This hasnt happened before I sent it in...
@vincent: use the internal, but will play my main game LOL (League) on my external 24 inch screen cause of ULMB, but need a new cable first, cause the S17 doenst have a Mini DP -.-Spartan@HIDevolution and Lakshya like this. -

Anyone else not being able to get the max Single Core boost? No matter what I do, all my cores always have the all-core-turbo.
Even with cinebench single core test, all my cores have same speed. Is this a bug or is this hard locked in BIOS or so?
I even tried lowering clocks in XTU (1 core Turbo was 3,5GHz, all other cores 3,0 GHz). No matter what I did, all cores were rock solid @3,0GHz, not one core boosted to the 3,5GHz... -
Hi all, anyone of you know where i can find the mux switch on the 1440p/rtx 3080 laptop?

Does anyone of you know if ASUS added a MUX option for the 4K versions recently like Alienware did for the x17? Or is there just no "hardware" switch available on the S17 which could be enabled by a BIOS update?

Just for your information. I recently had the chance to check out the 4K version of the GX703. The screen is very good and has no backlight bleeding... unfortunately the 4k versions is stuck with optimus mode. No chance to use the dedicated NVIDIA graphics card only with the internal screen...this is such a shame...
The peroformance of this good hardware was hold back due to Optimus so strongly that you can't recommend this device. Go with the QHD version if you have the chance... 4K is roughly 20% slower than the QHD version with advanced optimus and MUX. If you don't care about performance with the internal screen you can give it a chance of course.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
I too can't reach single core boost.
Have all cores on 4.8 two of them hit 4.9 but if I change SpeedShift in TPL in ThrottleStop to higher than 4.9 I get BSOD....no core has ever hit 5.4 wich is max overclock.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

I can set the values up to 5.4 in FIVR, but if I change max SpeedShift in TPL to more than 4.9 the computer freezes or restarts -

After 1 week, I noticed a weird thing:
When Adv. Optimus is activated, i get micro stuttering in all games. (Temps are fine, games run smooth, only one hard stutter every 30sec or so)
When I click on (normal) Optimus (in Nvidia control panel) then the stuttering is gone. But then I dont have Gsync.
Stuttering is also gone, when I activate "dGPU only" in BIOS.
This problem was mentioned a few times in other forums as well.
Advanced Optimus seems to be bugged.
Anyone has a fix? -
But even if I have -60mV or if I have zero changes, the thing is I cant break the 130W limit....so I think if I overvolt to say +20mV I will only hit that 130W mark sooner and clocks wont go higher....
Any way to work around the 130W limit?
Or I might just stay happy with -60mV and 4.9 Ghz on a few cores and 4.8 on the rest...Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
Hi
Just got my S17 a week ago and I am still tuning it in for performance.
I have grasped that 5.4 GHz is nothing to bother with...but right now I am running all cores at 4.9...I can only see 3 cores hitting the 4.9 mark, the others are at 4.8
What settings are you guys using? Is there a backside to have all cores at 4.9? Will the GPU not be able to stay at 140W?
Most ppl seem to run at 4.2 on all cores...I simply cant find a sweet spot =) -

Try BIOS function "dGPU only" and run time spy.
Had this problem too, only had 9500 CPU points, but after some trying I get almost 11k with new drivers and "nvidia GPU only" mode.

Someone noticed huge FPS drops in Games? I‘m on Turbo Mode with -60mV Undervolt and dGPU only.
I can‘t really specify when this happens but after very smooth gameplay it seems to drop FPS from time to time. Temperatures on CPU and GPU are under 80C.
I‘m loosing my patience with this device because the Software seems to very buggySpartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

So here is what I found out regarding the FPS drops. I have used Furmark to test the GPU. And with this program I could reproduce the issue.
In performance mode everything is fine because GPU has no OC on memory. With Turbo mode the GPU gets 75Mhz on Core and 125Mhz on memory OC. When Turbo Mode was activated the Furmark test was stuttering instantly.
So I set both values to 0 (non OC on GPU) with MSI Afterburner and the issue is gone. Afterwards I was curios and OC on core is working well, but OC on GPU memory produced instant stuttering. Will keep an eye on this in real life games. Maybe this could be my solution.
