Well ive had my Asus M3np for about 4 months, and i love that machine to death. Great performance for the cost. Anyhow, yesterday night, i went to close the lid of my laptop for the night and i hear a cracking sound. So i think to myself, thats not a good sign...and so be it when i opened up the lid, lo and behold a crack in the lcd screen! %@$%@#! well after inspecting the cause, i am supposing that it just cracked! there was nothing there that could have cracked the screen. Now i am going to call asus to see if it is under warrenty, but if not, what are my options? i mean i would love if i could go on ebay and purchase another screen but im not sure what would be conpatiable..anyone know?

in the meantime wish me luck and thank you in advanced!

    Wow that REALLY sucks [:0]
the LCD just cracked? that's so weird... if it was the hinges, that may be understandable, but just the screen itself; that's odd...

best of luck in your repair

although i did close it a bit hard, i didn't think it would be enough to break the screen, maybe it hit something, but i highly doubt it[ :(]

I doubt warranty will cover it. However, you can buy replacement screens. They aren't cheap though.

    Good luck.

Are you sure you didnt leave a pen or something on the keyboard? I mean it sounds a bit odd that you could just close it and crack it. Unless you put ALOT of force on it and pushed it down. And notice even that the LCD is actually not right against the keyboard, theres a small buffer. Something must have slipped inside or something while you were closing it. I've done laptop repair and not to discredit you or anything of course but countless people have told me, "it just broke on its own"... lol or "i havent spilled anything on it" and there would be chocolate milk stains on the motherboard (can still smell it!).

Oh also there's little chance it will be covered under warranty, not to say its impossible but once they see that lcd is cracked they're gonna assume you left a pencil or something on the keyboard and shut the monitor...

good point there, heck when i first saw it i couldn't belive it for myself! the first thing i did was check for what might of cracked it, but i really have no clue. I understand why asus would say no, hell i would say no, in the sense of, lcd's don't just crack. to be honest i can honestly say that i just put a bit a force into it(i was a bit pissed, and tierd, but i guess i got the worst of it), but not enough to crack it i thought. Anyhow, for a replacment screen if that so happens to be the case, is it possible to buy a screen off ebay? if so which one would work? thank you all so much

it may or may not... probably not.
Your best bet would be to order from someone who sells ASUS notebooks exclusively... perhaps Justin (ProPortable) or some other retailers.

Could it have had anything to do with heat or cold?

That is really bizarre. It's possible there was a minute weakness in the LCD that over time got worse and worse and this was just the time that it went.

Maybe if it already had a slight weakness, the heat of the memory when the lid was closed, then opened, then closed again may have cracked it. Especially if it's a small crack, this sounds likely. Let us know what ASUS says.

<Could it have had anything to do with heat or cold?>

i was thinking the same thing. When i first look at the screen (mind you everyone, the screen did not crack in half, just a little crack in the corner) anyways, the crack occured where the memory is located, and the computer had been on for quite a while with the lid close. I belive it might have occured when i opened the lid, and then closed it again, it could have happened, but i also agree with your first point, over time it may have gotton weaker, well, i await asus's call, hoping for "lucky" tech support

That would be a nice thought, but it won't work. I know exactly what happened and probable how it happened....... check the screws on the hinges.... by the screen..... if they get loose.. and they do over time, especially if you are hard on them... they will put unneeded stress on the screen. I've seen it happen a few times and in all cases, the unit had loose screwed around the hinges... Check that out, because it is pretty important.

i think thats exackly what happened pro, as you can see in the picture below what exackly happened

note: the crack looks pretty bad but mind you its not that bad, its about right, but looks alot worse on white backrounds, but barely noticable since it is in the corner

(i appologize for rge crappy webcam pic when i get my camaera back i will take a better picture)

Well, the good thing is you can still use it........ do you, what is a new screen worth? If you need to buy one, we probably have some..... but if you have to buy a new screen... wouldn't it be nice to upgrade to an SXGA? That is my suggestion to us if you can't live with it.

just to let you guys all know if you experiance this kind of problem, i just checked with the manufactour and a new screen runs you $700 dollers. Since this is a realitivly new model in canada, no used screens are avaialable and if so they run you $400. All i can advise is to be sure you never leave something on the keyboard, or someone will leave a dent in your wallet[} :)]

note: i use it the same amount, hell i watch movies on it with no problems

The M3Np isn't relatively new! I've seen it in stores for quite some time now... probably not a year yet, but definitely more than half a year

Well the Np has been out in the states since June of 2004.... but this really isn't that important... it would matter how long that screen has been used.
