i just got my a8jm last week and i am noticing that the notebook makes a clicking sound (i think its coming from the hard drive). it clicks every 2 seconds or so and is kinda loud when im studying at the library. it happens randomly and stops randomly independent of any programs running. my only concern is if its normal for the laptop or is there something wrong with mine.

You may need to define "clicking" or at least try to record it. I only say this because clicking from a hard drive is BAD and yet, we usually wouldn't see this on a new drive, especailly one that would have been tested prior to shipping....... and if you remember opening your notebook, they're packed very well. Either you bumped or dropped it enough to screw it up, or you're not explaining yourself well enough.

A click that's bad would be loud enough you could actually record it in sound recorder. If it's very, very light, you may just think it's worse than it is and it could very well be normal behavior.

Mine "Clicks" too but I'd put it more at "tick". It sounds pretty much like my desktop's noises when it seeks but alot quieter. Still, it's noticeable.

You can check with Everest what HD you have or look in the Hardware Manager. Chances are you have the Hitachi as I do. It's somewhat louder than the others.

If it really bothers you you can use Notebook Hardware Control to change the acoustic settings, though to me that seemed to slow hard drive access noticeably so I decided to deal with the little bit of noise.

I agree--it's a matter of degrees. It could be the "click of death" or it could just be that you're not used to the sounds of your computer accessing the hard drive. You might try and equate it with a similar sound that you know--is it as loud as fizzing pop/soda?

I'm unsure about this but isn't there a utility either in Windows or available for free that would allow you to "test" your hard drive for any abnormalities?

its the kind of sound that hard drive makes when its seeking something. the only problem is, the sound is constant and does not stop. on the top left corner of a8jm there are 3 lights and the tick happens every time the leftmost light blinks which is like 2wice every second

... well that is the hard drive activity light which blinks when there's activity.... so that is happening because of what is causing the noise, not the other way around if that is what you may think.. it's a chicken and the egg sort of thing, although I know which came first...

If this is constant, like you have the system on for an hour and it does it for an hour.... there's a problem. However, I'd like to know when it started. I know you only had it a week, but if it just started, it may be something else. Like, if it started after you installed something, or maybe got something (virus, spyware, adware)... if something is running that is causing activity on your hard drive, it may do the exact same thing. If it's been like that from the moment you turned it on - before you installed anything else or even took it online.... then I'd say it's safe to assume there may be something physically wrong.

Well that's not normal then..... I'd give them a call. In terms of the light coming on, yeah, it's always going to be doing something while it's on, but you shouldn't hear clicking at all.
