i am trying to connect my a8js to a hdtv via a dvi>hdmi cable
the image on the hdtv is cropped when i use 720 and 1080
i can customize the reslolution to match the hdtv's native resloution
when i go to do this in the advanced settings, it says that it voids warranty
is it safe? has anyone tried this?

    thanks in advance

does it really? It can be done that way and it's certainly safe. The only problem is if you set a custom res on the laptop screen itself and set it up to something that was unreadable, it's sort of hard to find your way back in to fix it... that's where the warranty part comes in. If you're setting it up for an external monitor, it's really not that difficult and I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure to set one of the external options to 1920 x 1080
