My a8js crashed while i was using Partition Magic to partition my pre-installed XP hard drive. Now it doesn't boot into windows because of blue screen and reboot.

Anyone know any solution to recover xp or my data?

    Things I've tried:
    1. XP Safemode failed to boot
    2. boot to ubuntu and mount XP NTFS(failed said wrong fs type)
    3. Tried Gparted (failed to resize XP NTFS)
    4. Asus recovery CD (Can't recover data or install xp over exisiting one)

Not sure if your data is lost, but reboot the laptop, then go into the bios, set the boot sequence to CD Rom first, then reboot, with the Recovery CD in, or a Windows XP CD.

From there you should be able to re-install/repair windows. (how ever i think you tried it according to the 4 things you listed)

    @milestonepc:
I tried using recovery cd but xp doesn't recognize the existing XP and if I install from recovery cd it will reformate HD.

I ordered a8js from milestonepc.com with 2gb memory + 100GB 7200rpm HD upgrade, if I connect a8js Sata hd to desktop system would that void waranty from you or asus?

Get a 2.5" mobile sata enclosure. Its about 20$. Hook up the drive to it and connect to your desktop. You cant void nobodys warranty. There are no warranty stickers. There is no way anyone will know that you removed the drive unless you tell them

Have you tried Knoppix? Knoppix boots into linux from CD and gives you read access to NTFS.

Darn, I was going to use Partition Magic to resize the partition and change the block size too. Maybe when I receive my laptop I will just do a fresh reinstall of XP.

    If knoppix doesn't work:

Stupid, effective solution: remove harddisk, plug as secondary in another laptop or a desktop (using IDE socket adapter), recover data.

If you can't access the data, the partition table is probably damaged. Try to repair; I never did that, try to google for it, probably there is software which will (try to) help.

Edit: sorry, this is pretty much Geared2Play's post. Didn't read carefully.

Give Knoppix a try, if there is a valid file system left it should be able to mount it.

You might want to check out the Partition Magic site and see if they have some kind of a recovery procedure for this type of event.

i basically tried knoppix to access ntfs files on ubuntu because I didn't have a system to burn knoppix live cd. I used mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/hd/ -tntfs and got wrong fs, i don't know why.

I tried ms-dos and list the c:\ directory and failed too don't remember what error messege.

I'm waiting see if milestonepc would reply about the warranty thing.

When you were using partition magic did you delete the hidden recovery partition? If not you can restore back to the way it was when you first got it by rebooting and hitting F9 to do a complete recovery.
