I am thinking about getting the s96j, the only thing that concerns me is that will i be able to add an integrated bluetooth thingy later on? i don't really want a usb thing sticking out.

I also don't want to get the z96j just for BT because i would prefer the screen on the s instead of teh Z.

Also, are there DVI add-ons i could get for the s96 since it doesnt' have dvi-output?

    THanks for all our help.

Some places like geared2play offer a BT option for the S96j. I'm not sure how easy it is too add BT in the future.

It cannot be added as a built in...what Geared2Play is offering is a USB module.

DVI cannot be added either. You can get an adapter that is effective in taking DVI output to VGA, but it won't go the other way.

hmmm, sure about that? when the bluetooth is internal, where is it connected to? is it part of the wireless lan card? or built onto the motherboard?

    insane

Before geared2play was offering a built in Bt module. I see they are no longer offering this. If it is built into the motherboard, perhaps geared2play switched motherboards and that is why it was a very expensive $80 upgrade if I recall correctly.

In the Service Manual on Intel's site for the S96j it does have the Blue Tooth module:
    http://cache-www.intel.com/cd/00/00/28/42/284251_284251.pdf

It is on page 1-9. It also shows on page 2-10 and 3-9 where to connect blue tooth module wires to motherboard. I imagine this manual is a very similiar to service manual they use for the Z96j. The bluetooth module is not part of the motherboard. It does look like it would be huge pain to upgrade though. There is quite a bit of disassembly and assembly to do it.

I suspect that there is a spot for bluetooth module and that it will work on the S96j if you are willing to do the work and someone will sell you module. It is unclear if the wires for module are with module or remain with notebook (I would supsect they are with notebook and attached to motherboard though).

To disassemble and assemble a laptop for installing a bluetooth module will take a long time. If you really need to install it, the service charge will be expensive.

so if bluetooth is important to me, i should either wait for the z96 or get a usb thingy?

Is it also a consensus that there is no adapter for dvi-output it it is not originally on there? This means i gotta find a new laptop w/ dvi =/.

ALso, does the z62f come with dvi? It says:
    1 x VGA port/Mini D-sub 15-pin for external monitor

    I don't know what "Mini D-sub" means....

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

it most certainly can be added. That was not a usb module we were listing. It was infact internal. We did the same with the z63a, the z70va, the z70v and the z71v while everyone said it cannot be done. The older modules are different though. They dont work on the s96j. We still have the internal modules left for those models. For the s96k we only had a few of those modules. That option only lasted a few days. Eventually you will see more such modifications from us however it will not be required becuase the z96j will soon be out.

We were charging 69$ for the module on the z63a z71v and z70v. Though we did not make much we were the only vendor in the world to offer it. Not everyone noticed but the once who did put a big notch on your ribbon. We did the same with the z71v and z70va screens. offered a downgrade to a wxga for 100$ more. Not very popular but we did sell out all our wxga screen in a few months time. It can be done!

I apologize Eddie. I totally misunderstood what you were offering and I now stand corrected.

However are you saying that once the Z96J can ship that you will no longer offer that option with the S96J, or that you will no longer offer the S96J at all?

Once the z96j is out i imagine asus will stock the modules. In which case dealers will be able to mod the s96j even users will. As far as i recall the module is fitted right next to the cpu. No disassembly required. The same goes for the z71v and z63a. Alot of people were under the impression that you had to gut these notebooks to insert bluetooth. Both had the port for internal bt. Its a wonder why asus did not offer these modules as a standard in these notebooks. The reality is that its a very simple procedure takes less then a minute without removing any major parts.

To put in BT for s96J is one minute job when it is on production line, not in dealers store, it is hidden inside, canot be reached from out side.

The reason is ASUS didn't control the configuration on this one...it is VBI so Intel set the configuration and Intel was trying to keep the price down.

The trick will be getting the USB Bluetooth module because it is not an option on the Z96J (it is standard).
