Guys, finally my asus is going to arrive in a week at most. After going through all the different posts, I realized that we should tweak our system first thing it arrives. SO what drivers and softwares need to be installed for it to run best?
As far I know I think some new BIOS update using WInflash. Nvidia,Dox etc. I would appreciate the list, a lot since before I install any of the other softwares I would want to make it upto date from systems point of view.

I actually wouldn't tweak a lot the first couple days, unless you want to do a complete fresh re-install of everything. There isn't *too* much bloat as it arrives and its fairly up to date driver wise. I personally wipped the HDs and installed a retail copy of Win7 I had a license for, but I'd have kept the original install for a couple weeks at least to break in the machine otherwise.
If you update anything, in my experience my 3DMark06 scores went from 9423 to 10095 going from stock Nvidia drivers to 195.55. -
where did u order ur laptop from cause i ordered mine on the 11/20 from xotic pc and im still in phase 1 wait for them to get laptop in stock >.<
-
It comes with win7 home premium .. it takes just 1 number change to instant inplace ultimate it
.. thanks for oem slic 2.1 bios and cert from asus already installed.
Update graph driver to the newest from nvidia.
Install the usual apps. -
Go custom edition window 7 ultimate. It's so much better than retail edition window 7 ultimate.
back to the topic:
1. install driver dox 185.85. you will see more improvement regarding 3d mark06 score than using 195.55
2. get a notebook cooler! This laptop run hot while gaming -
Unfortunately, DOX drivers are so old they don't support hardware Flash acceleration. Otherwise, I'd agree. 195.55 isn't too bad though, all games I've run, run well.

@hunter3160 - I ordered it on 9th from XoticPC. Today I got a mail from UPS that they have received an order from Xoticpc. Since you ordered on 11/20. Do not expect the laptop to arrive before christmas and most probably early Jan. If possible I would advice you to move your order to Gentech PC, they are much faster in terms of Asus. Call GentechPC to check the ETA. Overall I feel both resellers are good it's just that Gentech process Asus faster, while Xotic process Sager faster.

in the double digits, but still beat. -

in one of the threads I did read that windows 7 with 195.55 was creating overheating issues, and 185.85 actually solved it ??
-
As far as my experience seems concerned, my g51vx seems to run hotter w/ the 195.55 compared to 186.82. Also, my 3dmark06 score dipped, rather than improved.
Heck, if you check Sunny's thread about the G51, he scored on avg 200 points more with the stock drivers than i did with the 195.55 drivers. Odd, but food for thought there. -

My 195.55 idle temps are 58-62. 58ish if in 'Quiet Office' power saving mode and web browsing, etc. 62 if in 'High Performance' mode and browsing, etc.
Under extreme stress (furmark burn-in) my stabilized temps are 92c. -
i posted 3dmark scores from xp in the owners lounge, 195.55 got me 10400 or so with everything stock. 185.85 had a 70 point lower SM2 score iirc.
some people have higher idle because their clocks jump up every time they move a window with the newer drivers. i had that same issue back on the g50 with some 191 and xp64, nothing seemed to fix it (not even an os reinstall). haven't experienced it here yet. -
Actually, just wanted to verify and it idles around 55-56c when light web browsing and, in my current case, ripping a DVD with AnyDVD:
The 92c is stock, no cooler or added paste (yet).
Your 195.55 Win7 scores were almost exactly what I got: 10095 but I haven't checked under XP yet. Am going to test the new 195.62 WHQL's later this afternoon. Have you benched those yet thalanix?
I don't seem to have the 'move a window, higher temps' problems on this deck... although, if I do anything to bump the GPU up from 200/120/400 throttling it certainly goes up then. But moving windows around doesn't do it here either.
Just out of curiosity, what do you use to monitor your CPU, thalanix? I've been using CoreTemp but I don't think its the most accurate and TMonitor is too fast to gauge properly (useful in other situations though). Just curious. -
MichaelKW, Did you use cooler and paste when you get 55-56C idle with light web browsing and ripping dvd?
-
fuyuki: "The 92c is stock, no cooler or added paste (yet)."
55c is a nice idle. im guessing that's at lowest fan speed and a similar ambient as well. mine has to go in for RMA (broken thermal sensor, compiling anything will fireball the CPU into oblivion), so hopefully they'll change the paste or perhaps a better faring replacement. the win7 setup does get the bsod (rather quickly now, cod crashed twice in a row after 10 minutes), so i suggested it might help their engineering team.
of the 195.x series, 195.62 scored the lowest in 3dmark and on my testing scene. people who want to play borderlands on xp should go with 195.39 or 186.81, as 195.55 has shadow drawing problems. 195.62 if you want your HD flash acceleration.
only way i've found to monitor CPU (graph-like) is by TMonitor + recording. CPU-Z, CPUID etc. don't have a graph, and RMClock shows maxed.
edit: with 195.55 on xp, idle is at 62 (22c room). furmark hits 93, fan kicks in, then hovers between 92 and 93.

Never realized what a big difference the built-in power modes make to GPU temps. Battery was running low so switched to "Battery Saving" mode and the GPU is now stabalized at 51c. Thats still with light browsing and now ripping. Yet, the clocks are still the same for GPU: 200/120/400. Sharing the same fan with the CPU really does heat up the GPU. And indeed, the fan is at lowest rpm (i believe) and ambient is 21c.
fuyuki: thalanix is correct, no cooler or replaced paste yet.
thalanix: sorry to hear about your temp sensor problem... hope they get it back to you asap... and learn from it too. More important, I hope they seat the components better for you. I hate warrenty stickers! Thanks for the driver and monitor nfo. -

Yes, using Power4gear... but could setup the same profiles using Win7's native power tools I believe. Don't think there's anything special in P4G per se, just easier hotkey access, more profiles to work with and fancier interface.

Just got my laptop. COuldn't explore more, a bit busy since last 2 weeks of semester, grrr bad timing... Anyways, for some reason, whenever I run gtalk and try to sign in, the system hangs completely!!! Same thing with yahoo messenger!! SO far other softwares that I have installed are skype, office, acrobat reader and they have no problems so far..
any suggestions?
advice from G51j-A1 owners
