This post is somewhat directed to proportable as I'm sure almost nobody else here would be privy to the information I require. but if anyone else has some advice that might be useful, feel free...

I'm going to buy a Z71v. But last night I remembered that I need to make sure the DVD drive can be freed from the oppressive shackles of region codes.

After searching the forums it looks like most Asus laptops come with the matsu****a dvd drive (at least the dvd burners) which cannot be de-codified.

So please tell me, does the Z71v come with a Matsu****a drive? Absolutely?

    thanks for your help

Won't software like DVD Region-Free work regardless of the DVD drive? I've used it before and it worked like a charm. Plus, it's less risky than messing with your drive's firmware...

It does work like a charm, on anything but Mat****a drives. Trust me, it doesn't work on them. If anyone have a solution for these drives I would love to know.

Hes right, Matsu****a happens to be the only drive that will not work with any region free software. Which is why I'd like to know if I can go with another on the Z71V.

I have heard that the drive can be swapped for a third party one. ASUS says this is not possiple, but Jasman suggests otherwise.
