Hey there got my brand new G51 and I love it. love the graphics card in this baby. but anyway wanted to OC it some. went to 580/900/1450 and i was seeing artifacts while playing World of warcraft at full settings. the GPU temp was only maxing out at 80 C. Is this normal? should I just lower my clocks some? I hear people having higher clocks while playing crysis and no artifacts. i ran furmark and didn't even see any...

Sometimes different games do that. If it doesn't appear anywhere else I'd just write it off as a quirk.
How bad are the artifacts, by the way? -
My 2c... -
well i mean i have never had a game doing it before. they aren't very big... I just ran 3dmark06 and it was artifacting decently on the second GPU test. not real big ones big enough of them... also noticed little ones on the last gpu test. but the ones in WoW were fairly minor but they happen often i guess. not sure how to explain it.

Try downclocking slightly and see where that takes you, like Leo suggested.
-
-Leonid -
well i threw it back down to the stock clocks and ran 3dmark and there is still artifacts on the second test. i stopped it near the end of the second one. never got above 86C... any ideas?
-
EDIT: Just noticed your memory is at 900mhz. That's probably the case... try to lower it to 850mhz or w/e -

He said he put it back down to stock clocks and still got artifacts.
That doesn't bode well for your GPU. Try different drivers. -

Which driver is he initially using?

Are you sure you are not seeing aliasing? If what you are seeing are small black "artifacts" on distant objects it is likely to be aliasing. Turn antialiasing up some and see if they go away.
-
it looks like there are random cracks on the screen. but i was just playing crysis at my stock clocks on enthusiast with no problems since my last post. also i am using the DOX 185.85 drivers. but I have been playing a very playable crysis on full settings and no artifacts and only hit 90C. so i dunno
-
-
i go back to play some wow and i get the artifacts. not as much... but i am still at stock clocks... ... i mean they are barely there but they are there and shouldn't be.

ATITool (That's the name, right?) detects errors.
Try running tests on that. By the sound of things you're looking at an RMA. -
Try taking a screenshot for us?
-
ok so i downloaded ati tool and it gave me an unsigned driver which vista didn't like, and a little error thing about a kernel not working cuz of it. but then atitool still worked. so i hit scan for artifacts and it did not report any errors but there were very many like lightning streaks in the 3d area. like abstract art. i am pretty sure it is not supposed to do that... can anyone help?
-
forgot to mention i ran atitool for a while and it hit 88C then fans kicked in and dropped back down to 83 and i stopped it. the yellow things are not that intense now. just yellow like patches pop up every couple seconds while checking for artifacts. but my graphics card isn't getting too hot...
any ideas? -
Posting a screenshot could help enormously. There are different types of artifacts for different reasons. Even different types of overheating (memory/shader or core iirc, all have different types of artifacts when overheating).

is the good pic while it is just sitting there. 700fps...

the bad one...
but also the atitool was not installing the drivers correctly apparently. cuz it gives me this error screen. i will link in two seconds.

know what this means? -
The second picture is definitely artifacting, most likely related to your memory. If you are seeing that sort of artifact in games, I'd first suggest going back to stock nVidia drivers and if that doesn't solve it, contact Asus for an RMA.

Those are definitely artifacts. If it is doing that at stock clocks, then it needs to be exchanged, returned, or RMA'd.
-
it only does that while in atitool though. when running 3dmark it is fine until the second test. it has not as noticable black artifacts like that. that show up for a split second. along with in WoW. although very minor. but i was just playing Crysis for 45 minutes... and no artifacting on the gamer settings. or the enthusiast settings. Think I should just try to take it back and exchange it?
-
i would return it.
-
aww ... that sucks. Cuz i just installed everything on this one. lol oh well. I will let you guys know whats up later today probably.
-
Pics or it didn't happen?
-
erm....there are pics on the first post on this page.
-
so i took it back to best buy and decided to upgrade to a g71
then he said because i was doing that he wouldn't charge me the 15% restocking fee. which would have been BS. BUT ran atitool, furmark, and 3dmark06 already and works great. only hitting temps of 83C too after furmark and 3dmark06. this thing is even better than the g51

The G71 has stolen another G51 user from us. Curses.
