yes you can, but not likely right now. Santa Rosa users like us use SetFSB to get a higher overclock. However the G50VM is very new and it actually uses a new chipset(Montevina) so there are no third party software that can overclock the processor at the moment. Eventually the chipset will be supported, just not sure when.

Which processor does it come with? And yeah, your G50 should be able to run XP no problems, infact, very fast.

Firstly, D3X is absolutely right in each single word

Secondly, try to doubt yourself: do I need more power?, do I need XP?

I second D3X, and third Oldman. Or was it second Oldman, and third D3X? Whatever :)

I agree with what's been said.

Um hate to crash the party but was able to overclock from day 1 with setfsb, the pll is already supported. I got 3.0ghz stable no problems and somebody else went to 3.2ghz. Both of us using the A1 models.

Looks like RMClock works well also but it did not pick up all the right stats on the new cpu in the A1 but the X1 has the older cpu so it will probably have it.

The main question is, is it necessary to overclock? If all of a user's tasks never once max out the CPU, then what is the point of bothering with overclocking? So, one should only do it if one needs it.

Or, of course, if one just have too much spare time on one's hands. :)

Sweet! That's great news, which PLL chip is it running or did the same Pll work? Perhaps you should post a new SetFSB thread for Montevina to inform other users with the same chipset.

I looked all over online for the PLL for my new G50vt-X1 (sweet deal at $999!), and couldn't find anything. No problem, I'm a college student on break with plenty of free time, so I just went through the list in setfsb (version 2.1.87) and found that this one works: ics9lpr604aglf.

I'm going to mess around a bit more later tonight, but for the moment I have the FSB to 1331 which means the P8400 is at 2.828 Ghz--this is without the DirectConsole overclocking.

I'm not too concerned about burning out the processor because I've never gotten either core above 57C even after a couple hours of Crysis.

I'm a bit of a noob, so please don't complain to me if you get BSOD, but I hope this helps anyone else interested in overclocking...
