There is no problem downgrade to Windows 7 with N56VJ. All you need to do before install Windows 7 is go to BIOS and disable secure book and enable Launch CSM and PXE.

Thank you ... very much , i was pretty sure there must be a way to downgrade.
The drivers with windows 7 should all work without any problems , i presume ? just download them from ASUS website and reinstall OR the laptop come with DVD with all drivers ?

You may also need to convert your volume you're installing Windows 7 onto from GPT to MBR using diskpart. The drivers should work, although you may need to install some in compatibility mode should you run into problems (but they should be backwards compatible to 7).

Also, downgrading is not the same as a full installation. You can downgrade from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 7 Pro (or other eligible versions and editions of Windows) per the downgrade rights. Installation of Windows 7 over Windows 8 entails reformatting the drive.

    Good luck!

I am also a recent purchaser of the N56 withWindows 8 and wish to reinstall Windows 7 .
Did you encounter any other problems in the Win 7 installation ?

Do continue your Part 2 of the adventure ... :)

In my case, it took me a while tofinally understand why Windows 7 DVD does not boot from my DVD drive...

Was it Secure Boot, in your case?

Yes, secured boot was one of the many "pains". I've now successfully booted DVD toWindows 7 , but hv not done a full install to the hard drive yet.

The Asus Manuals are all silent on bios, UEFI, csm etc. Thankfully we hv great forums like this ones !

    :D

Yeah, OEMs generally don't advise nor want you to load a different operating system other than what ships with the machine, so typically what info they do provide is minimal.

    Hello,

How about this? Is it possible to take a Win 7 x64 hard drive from a previous laptop and replace the Win 8 hard drive in the N56VJ and simply start it up as if it were the default? Would that work? I have my setup done quite nicely, and I'd like to avoid having to reinstall everything, if possible.

    Cheers

You would 1st need to disable the UEFI settings (Secured Boot , CSM etc) .
However , I doubt if it would work. Windows 7 will detect a "material " change in hardware, and probably will not work .
(I hope to be proven wrong though , so why not give it a go ? )

Pardon the ignorance, but are the UEFI settings disabled exclusively in the BIOS? Since I'm not familiar with the settings you mention--I've been on Win 7 on a Core 2 Duo for some time--I want to ensure I get all of them. How many settings would you suggest I need to pay attention to? Thx.

Most likely it will not work, because that means Windows 7 was installed on the other machine; therefore, the HAL will not match and you will most likely be presented with a blue screen upon loading Windows.

marclees is right about the CSM (except it needs to be enabled for Windows 7, not disabled). Secure Boot I don't think needs to be disabled; that's typically required when booting off of external media or off of the optical drive.

Ah, ok....alright, how about another scenario: what if I upgrade my legacy laptop to Win 8 first and then move the hard drive over? Same issue or will it pick up the new HW components in the Asus laptop?

You can try it either way, but here's the thing with HAL: when you install Windows, the hardware in the system is checked by the installation, and the appropriate registry entries are made. So regardless of which version of Windows you install, the hardware from that particular system is going to be registered with that installation of Windows.

Once you move the drive over, it's just a matter of hoping. Sometimes if the hardware is similar, there's a chance it won't blue screen. :)

How are you folks getting in the UEFI BIOS with the N56VJ model:

    Secure Boot Mode
    Fast Boot
    Launch CSM

There is only 1 BIOS file (203) for this model. I do not have any of these options. I have clean installed Windows 8 Pro in UEFI mode. In System Information it shows that my BIOS is in UEFI mode.

Per ASUS website for this model:

    BIOS 203
1.Hide “Secure Boot Mode” option in Pre-Loaded Win8 case
2.Fix system can be shutdown when Ezflash/CrisisRecovery running
3.Disable CSM when SecureBoot is enable

On the N56VZ model these features are available with latest BIOS. I know because I owned one before it got stolen.

    Thanks,
    Robert

Hello, kind of the same model but a different question.

I bought an Asus N56VB-S4106H (guess this is the portuguese version). it came with win8 wich i dont like so i've installed windows 7 64bit without any problems. the issue is that i get no audio at all from my usb soundcard (ESI U46XL). i know this usb sound card works on windows 7 64bits because i have it working on a desktop computer running win7 64bit. but it doesnt work on my new asus laptop with the very same OS. when i go to device manager i get a question mark saying : " USB controller (Universal Serial Bus) " this warning appears before i install my usb sound card or drivers, wich makes me think that im missing some laptop driver that prevents my audio card from running. does anyone knows wich asus laptop driver may that be? (also my usb soundcard drivers install correctly)

    solved : i've installed intel's usb 3.0 driver. http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/sftwr-prod/usb3ehcd

Hi I have just purchased the Asus N56VB-S4041H and understand how to install windows 7 perfectly.

What i'm unsure of is what drivers I will need to download now to install onto it and where I should download them from. The sites I have been looking at seem rather dodgy (im sure its more likely I don't know what I should be looking for though)

Any help would be great thanks.

You should still be able to acquire most through Asus' support page. Although they're "Windows 8" drivers, Windows 7 uses a similar platform. Any drivers that don't work from their support page you'll have to get from the component manufacturer (i.e. generic drivers), which may not work.

Good to know you got it all configured and set up how you like it. That's what's important! Though people are still opting for Windows 7 where they can, Windows 8(.1) is technically a better OS.
