 hi i have a ASUS N61V notebook brand new out of box.

system runs great except when im playing a game it randomly shuts off

    Completely.

anytime the system is idle and not doing anything its runs fine, however if i play for example Prototype or COD4 it just shuts off completely

no indication of a driver, software of hardware failure are in the event VWR.

only note in the event viewer is that windows unexpectedly shuts down.

    here is the spec

    # Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
    # Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 (2.0GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 6MB Cache)
    # 16" WXGA HD LCD display at 1366x768
    # NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M 1GB GDDR3 memory
    # Atheros AR9285 BGN Wireless, Bluetooth
    # 4GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM (2GB x 2)
    # 320GB Seagate 7200.4 Hard Drive
    # Blu-ray/DVD SuperMulti
    # 1.3MP Webcam, Included Slipcase
    # 90W (19V x 4.74A) 100-240V AC Adapter
    # 6-cell 48Wh 10.8v 4400mAh Lithium Ion battery
    # Dimensions (WxDxH): 15.4 x 10.6 x 1.5
    # Weight: 6lbs 6.6oz

any ideas what could be happening>?

to me this is a GPU failure or the north bridge fault.

Does it happen with the same game or different games, how many different games?

How hot is your GPU? Download CPUID Hardware Monitor and let us know.

    Let us know.

i checked my drivers and i found out that only the windows driver model was installed

so i headed over to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ and downloaded and installed the INF and driver set they have

i installed the nvidia Modified Drivers and INF file. then rebooted and have been playing COD 4 and Prototype as well as Crysis.

i will continue to play to duplicate the error and i will let you know

and to m394byt3 the shutdown issue has been happening with every 3D game i throw at at and its completely random as far as the times go when starting the game untill system failure.

The system has a significant amount of heat coming from the vent when im running a 3d application.

Hey I have the same system as you and it has the same issue.

Prototype caused it for sure, but I was somehow able to get that to improve with different drivers.

However, it also happens when I tilt my computer on its side when I am laying down. Did you ever find the official culprit?
