I had the same issue, with a different asus.
Just use windows 7 atk drivers or download from asus website ATKPackage_Win8_32_64_Z100018 (v18).
I tested v22,v23 and v24, but they had the problem you described or simply didn't show any icon for brightness.
Despite the lower version, v18 was the latest version of atk posted on asus download page (2012.11.07 update)

Have you installed ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities ? It is available here ASUS - Notebooks- ASUS ASUS ZENBOOK UX32VD - Download tab - select OS - Utilities.
I would also install Keyboard Device Filter Utility.

I have got reply from ASUS

    we tried V25
ATK Package v.1.0.0025 from the below link?

Downloads - ASUS ATK Komponenten - ATK Package

    but no sucess

    answer from asus:
''Have you tried any other key combinations? Perhaps the brightness volume buttons have changed in Windows 8. Otherwise I suggest to wait for an update on the ATK driver. In the meanwhile I will report this to our engineers and will get back to you if a solution is found.''

    I have now:

This is a common problem in asus. Even the N53 and the N56 with Windows 8 have the same problem. For the N53 with the version 18 of the driver ATK resolves the inconvenience. For the N56 rather not be solved by any driver ATK you install.
I think the same problem is present on notebooks with Windows 8 preinstalled.

I would have thought a simple bar that did not take up a huge part of the screen was more functional?

At the moment all machines are using the built in windows bars.

    ..they're model specific?

On the n56 now (on atk .....1.0.0020, next to last version), I have the ROG indicators. Or the transparent black boxes with white text, for all of the indicators. They look exactly like the gnome osd, so I like those.. clean, nothing fancy, no animation, etc.

edit: btw, the osd themes are definitely contained in the ATK-package.
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download ATK_package

And the n56 does have the 0020 version listed in it's download. While the ux32 has the 0022 version listed. ..It's just a set of files in the program files/asus/atk package/atkosd. The hotkeys and so on refer to that daemon/those files when they trigger the osd animation. Anyone want to try changing it? Might need a reboot, and/or resetting prefetch, that sort of thing before the references change.

The icons are determined by the ATK driver. In N56 notebook with Windows 8 icons brightness, volume, sound off and the second screen is replaced by the standard Windows icons while the brightness of the keyboard and touchpad were those of Windows 7. The 0020 version of the atk driver for Windows 8, but not for windows 7.

Oh, right. I see. That's the entire user-level execution requesting elevated privileges problem at run-time turning up again... Not much to do about that, then.

...I suppose it might be possible to hack the win8 execution privileges for a specific app, or something like that. Make it run before the shell opens as admin.. could possibly work. I've no idea how that might be done, though, or if it's even possible.

Sure would be a lot easier if Asus had whoever made the package sign their install package with the right privileges, though.. I mean, I know for a fact that there's nothing you're not "allowed" to request. It's just that you're prevented from having a program package spawn new undeclared processes that then want monitor/admin access.

(Then again, it's been a while since I did any of this. Could be you have to go on a Pilgrimage to Gates' house and ask for permission in person now or something..)

I think it's just a matter of correct drivers. With a version of the driver AKT (can not remember which) the brightness of the keyboard and touchpad used the standard Windows icons.
Among other things, the N56 is not working properly duplicates the screen with HDMI nice setting in Windows 8. It is probably a problem with the graphics card Intel 4000.

Anyone have news of the different icon for brightness and volume?

I contacted asus support. They told me to uninstall and reinstall the drivers:
    ATK
    Instant key
    Keyboard filter.

I did what they said but did not change anything.

atkosd2.exe is what gives you those pretty visuals for the hotkeys. It probably needs an update for win8.
