It may be time for you to go through the No POST checklist.

I think trying with each of the 4 sticks of RAM separately may be a good idea, and also vary the RAM slot that you use.

Some old motherboards are a bit cranky when it comes to replacing RAM. Give it a few more tries.

It may also be that the new RAM "fried" something or that you did in the process... I hope that didn't happen.

Wait a minute, you just replaced the RAM while the notebook was in Hibernate?? Your BIOS was having a fit on restart because it is stuck with a discrepancy with the OS being reloaded from Hibernate saying there's 2x512 chips and the BIOS saying there isn't.

You should always do system upgrades with the system turned completely shutdown and OFF. You also remembered to take the battery out before you put in the new RAM, right?

I'm assuming that step 4 above was you forcing a shutdown with holding the power button in until it turned off.... OK, Try to do the CMOS/BIOS reset - turn the notebook off, replace the old RAM, push the reset button (there should be a small hole in the bottom of the notebook - take a paperclip and push the toggle inside there), and then try to reboot. *If* that works and Windows loads, then shutdown the notebook again and replace the RAM, and reboot; at that point everything should be fine with ~3.2GB of total RAM for Windows.

I also noticed the Hibernate thing, but that shouldn't cause the computer to stop booting. I forgot once to shutdown before upgrading RAM as well (shame on me) and the computer just didn't resume from hibernate, I restarted, pressed F8 and continued to load Windows normally. That's why I believe that, because the system no longer POSTs properly, something else is wrong than just a wrong size hiberfil.sys.

Also, the BIOS shouldn't be confused by this, only Windows -- when the system starts resuming from hibernation, the OS bootloader has already taken control.

But this is just background info. Follow ClearSkies' suggestions, as they may fix your problem.

right first off thank you both for the replies. i did leave the battery connected but i dont see how much of an issue this could be as it did switch on then went blank but if im wrong im wrong. i have today taken my laptop to a local computer shop who deal with asus and he tried a few things but nothing happened he did however say that the led`s above the keyboard (caps, num, scroll lock) flashing together indicated a memory fault, so at the moment im trying a reset took the batt out leaving it for an hour then i`ll try again it is still covered by asus so if this still does not fix the problem then it will have to go back for them to look at it cheers again guys

Did you try my suggestions of trying each RAM chip individually on each slot?

Hmm. At this point I would say send it to ASUS. As to the RAM, it's difficult to tell if it's something you did or if it is indeed faulty. If possible you should exchange it from warranty, just to be sure.

And next time, be sure to remove all sources of power from the notebook, and shut it down -- not hibernate -- before you upgrade the RAM.
