I have noticed this piece of plastic that pops out of the side of the laptop. It has the word "EXPRESS" written on it.
I don't think it is the card reader because that is located in the front and i have an SD card currently in it.

Does anyone have any idea on what it does or what it is used for?

Its an express card slot, the plastic thing is a holder, for as you've already found, SD cards and similar , as it i generally right above the card reader.
