would haveing dual boot of win 7 and ubunta help out with battery lasting longer. as in that i can use ubunta for when i'm in school would that give the note book a longer battery life or would it not make a difference compared to jus t running win 7. for school i will most likely be typing or using as a digital book storage.

ubuntu (even with aggressively configured cpufreqd and laptop-tools) is not better than win7 in terms of battery life. for me, it was 1h20m-1h30m or so on 8.10 and 10.04 (a1), and 1h40m-2h on windows.

Is there a linux distro that is better for power consumption? Mandriva? OpenSUSE?

There may be some slight differences in Linux distros out of the box, but by the time you have customized your power settings, I really don't think the base distro will matter: they are all capable of using the same tools. Unfortunately I have found that the Windows chipset drivers usually run better at power management than Linux, and the G51's battery mode in the Asus utility is pretty good at conserving battery.

Why not install linux and then install Sun Virtualbox to virtualize your windows install inside linux. That way you can run both OS's without the hassle of rebooting.

    Just a thought...
